Well, Roger Wilco, you are correct when you say they do it once and drop dead; that is certainly true of the male ants. Once they mate then they die. The queen has a sac inside her abdomen that stores the sperm she receives from the male. When an egg passes down her "egg tube" she can choose whether or not to open a valve that will allow a sperm to pass through to fertilise the egg. Fertilised eggs produce female ants (queens, workers and soldiers), whereas unfertilised eggs become males.
