I think it was so that you must upgrade once first, otherwise the win8 product key will not activate cleanly installed win10. After the upgrade you can do a clean win10 install with the upgraded product key. At the same time the upgraded key no longer works for win8 installs.
But yeah, if win8 works for you, why fix it right now.
Sure that directx 12 is only in win10, but I don't think there are games using solely dx12 yet.
