Are you a sucker?

I don't remember what it was, but somebody recently showed me something they said costs $60k and I thought that was too expensive. Then I saw the actual listed price was $59,999.99 and thought that wasn't so bad.
Do they really think pricing it 1 penny less will make a sale? I think they (those that price things 1 penny less) think we're all suckers.

I guess I might be a double sucker then

In eve I would often find myself buying from the people selling at straight prices rather than the "niners" that strictly speaking was less expensive.
Buy one unit of Ingame currency..

I worked in the marketing world for a while. I have to say that I hate marketing... because it works. Companies will even turn a product sideways, say its a different shape, sell it as a "limited time special edition". It will be the exact same product. It's all about presentation.

Think I heard about that one.
If I remember it was a cereal of shredded wheat shaped into squares.
For a limited run they rotated the box photo 90° and called it a special limited "diamond edition".
Although my memory is fuzzy, and this so far has also taken on the air of an urban myth.
I wouldn't defend the legitimacy of this with any veracity.

Speaking of marketing, they keep reducing the size of food packaging here in the US - I assume it's the same everywhere. Anyway, a couple of years ago the name brand ice cream companies reduced their size from 1/2 gallon to 1.5 quarts. So then the store brand reduces their size from 1/2 gallon to 1.75 quarts and says it has 15% more!*

didn't that practice originate with used car sales? - for different price tiers the car yards had to offer certain levels of warranty, so by offering a car for $4999 they'd make almost the same cash but didn't have to offer a $5000 level of support as required by law

I think it's everywhere. First noticed it on some candy bars, lucky for us the price remains the same even if the product is now smaller..

It has taken me time, but I have managed to get my brain to round up when it sees xxx.99, simple because I was sick of the marketing technique. So now when I see £4.99 I automatically think 'right five pounds for that'. Works most of the time anyway
