It seems to be a pattern with FD as their skins are also a rip off and need to either be much cheaper or work on all ships. This isn't a free to play game so the pricing is unjustifiable as far as I'm concerned. They don't realise that far more people would be willing to buy add ons/skins if it's priced fair (i.e. cheap), likely making much more money then they do from them currently. I for one haven't bought a single skin and unless their policy changes I likely never will, as they just aren't good value for money (I mean £8 for one skin for one ship is ridiculous).
I would agree with you if the game was on a subscription based model. Having to pay a standing monthly order and then pay that sort of money on top would be excessive. As it currently stands, totally free to play after purchase and no 'pay-to-win' micro-transactions, I don't think it is unreasonable. Besides another way to look at it is just paying for your subscription for a year in one go - cheaper then WoW at £9.99 a month (and they are charging £34.99-49.99 for their expansion pack). So for two years WoW would cost you £274.75 - £298.75, ED will cost you £69.98 (based on the prices currently posted on the shop-site: Game = £29.99 Horizons = £39.99).
Although I have brought a few skins for ships, I refuse to pay over £5 for one. That said, given they are only a cosmetic thing is charging anything for them really good value?
