Powerplay Beta Delayed

Postby de Carabas » Fri May 15, 2015 8:51 am

Not sure if everyone has seen it but:

Michael Brookes wrote:Hi everyone,

We want to update you on the Powerplay release. The team are working really hard on what is going to be a huge and very exciting update and earlier today in my weekly post I said we were still tracking to release the Beta next week.

However, in order to be sure we release the best build we can we have now decided to move the Beta release out by up to an additional week, depending on progress, so I wanted to let you know as soon as possible. This also means the release date of Powerplay will change.

We will of course keep you updated. We really appreciate your understanding.

Powerplay is looking very good, and it’s a major update so it’s better to give it a little more time, and also we'll appreciate as many of you as possible helping with the Beta!

Thanks

Michael

Lots of encouraging feedback to FD to take the time to get it right...

Thanks for the info.
Better this way around than rushing it. We don't want it to feel like an unfinished game, do we ;)

Frontier really need to get Powerplay right, they've taken a fair bit of stick over the lack of or the incomplete nature of some of ED and Powerplay is seen as being a huge step forward to plug the gaps and move the game forward. A half assed release would be very bad news.

Talking of news it's Friday and we were looking forward to hearing again about Powerplay going into Beta next week. So will this mean that this weeks Newsletter will be a dud, or will they reveal another tasty new change that they haven't mentioned yet that we can expect in 1.3?

I administrate a couple hundred Redhat servers for a job, and deal daily with developers that deploy code to our environment. We have more than 200 custom built java applications running at any one time. I can say from experience I'd much prefer a developer take the time they need to release good code late rather than the alternative of releasing unfinished or buggy code on time. Not only does it make for happy end users it also lets me have a good nights rest uninterrupted by panicked phone calls at 2AM that something isn't working. I'm sure FDev shares these desires.

I'm glad folks are being supportive, often developers are harassed by ignorant people that have no clue what they're talking about (which there are plenty of already in their forums). It stinks because I really am looking forward to the new content, but I can wait. :)

Kinda good news for me. I can stay out on my expedition longer :D Seriously though, I don't mind waiting a little longer for them to release PP. If that's what it takes to get it right, then so be it.

Gives me time to build bank before the Courier and DiamondBack arrives.

Couldn't agree more. In fact it sounds like our jobs are very similar in everything except I'm probably the one making that panicked call to you as the manager of a large Java, Linux Redhat, Oracle 11g suite of custom applications and servers. So the more time FD takes the better. Which has surprised me in the past, how short their Beta periods are when they do come out (recently they've only been a week). There is a lot to this game and there will be a lot to Powerplay, just as there was a lot to Wings. Wish I had some of those smart cookies on my team! ;-)

My vote is that both of these will exist in the price gap between the Cobra and the Asp, somewhere between the 2 and 4 million mark.

Incidentally I played around with the pictures of the Courier and the Cobra from the newsletter. Using the measuring tool in Photoshop, with the width of the pilot seat as a calibration reference, the Courier seems to be about 40% longer than the Cobra and 40% narrower (so similar footprint just turned 90 degrees). The ships are at different angles so its really rough, but superimposing the Cobra over the Courier, resizing it so the seats are the same size and altering the angle these estimates seem to look about right.
