Red Queen suggested I may enjoy playing with you guys, so as I just got a copy of E:D I thought I'd swing by and say hello.

I'm female, 34 in a few days, and British. I'm usually known online as confused.brit or Aelon Rhiadra, if either nick is familiar, add me as a friend and say hi! ;)

Elite cred:
I was a youngster with a copy of the original Elite on Amiga 600, although my copy was set up so it loaded with a docking computer preinstalled to the ship. I don't think it would have been as much fun for me back then if it wasn't.

Moved on to Oolite about the time I discovered Linux, discovered the game just as much fun for pootling around the galaxy as an adult as a child. Still couldn't dock for crap about 50% of the time. Many boomies.

And now I'm here, still missing the docking slots on Corialis Stations! If you see someone suicide run into one, its probably me. I'm not a terrorist, I just can't fly! I hope to improve with time though.

I'm not very good at combat, so I'll be leaving the PvP to those who like it. I may hook up the teamspeak once I'm comfortable flying my little ship into narrow passageways.

Hello and welcome aboard, Commander Rhiadra!

What controller do you use? Mouse and keyboard? That might explain your difficulties docking.

Anyway, enjoy the group and fly safe! :)

PS4 controller using what was DS4 tool and now called InputMapper to enable it to talk to the PC.

I'm still getting used to the controls for one though. I agree mouse and keyboard isnt going to work very well, much too fiddly.

I think i'm probably going to have to custom the controls some as the default seems to be missing some vital in docking situations controls. Not being too hasty though, i may find out why thos controls are mapped the way they are.

Out of interest, which controller scheme do you tend to go for? There being 3 of them seems a little confusing.

Yay! Welcome aboard Aelon! Glad you joined us :)

You will get better at docking. It's probably the hardest thing in the game LOL. Given a few hundred attempts, you will start to dock like I do: FULL throttle through the mail slot, and one fluid move into the port. See you in game soon!

I'm using a X55 HOTAS and I set my controls up pretty much from scratch, so someone else can probably answer that better than me.

In any case, if you haven't already, I'd recommend you to bind the thrusters (at least thrust up, down, left and right) as these are quite useful, especially when docking. And if you don't have enough buttons, you can use the "Flight landing overrides" section which only becomes active when the gear is down.

Hi Aelon,

Some tips if you're going to create your controller scheme:
1. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier\EDLaunch\Products\FORC-FDEV-D-1010\ControlSchemes
Or wherever you installed the game and make a copy of one of the .binds files you see there.
If you have a PS4 controller, I'd imagine a good starting point would be the PS3 files

2. Once you made the copy, rename it to whatever name you fancy and it will appear in the in-game controller selection dialog.

3. Either edit the file, directly if you know what you're doing, or customize it in-game.
If you do customize it in-game, it will be saved as file Custom.binds in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings whenever you quit the game.

4. Copy that file back to your own .binds file you created in step 2 and iterate through steps 3&4 until you're happy with the results.

5. Make a backup copy of your file and store it somewhere else than in the EDLaunch directory because it will probably be erased when you download the 1.2 update coming soon

One last tip, as Flip was saying, use the Landing overrides to remap your Boost Key away. Helps tremendously to avoid fat or sticky fingers to launch the afterburners when inside a station. Just remember to lower the landing gear once you get docking permission ;)

Greetings and welcome commander, hope to see you out in the big black! Btw, I thought I was OK at flying and docking with a controller and then I found that a HOTAS setup, once you get used your it is a life saver. And the Thrustmaster T Flight X is one of the more affordable ones and I love it.

Hi, Welcome aboard!

Will probably see you out there in the dark sometime... or, given the size of the galaxy... maybe not...

Fly safe.
