Elite: Dangerous PvE - Mobius

Hi everyone,

Habu here, a backer from early days, real-life made me take a long break but I was sure pleased to see all the work that had been done in ED once I installed the client again. I also have a much better PC to play on now. I have quit too many games in the past because of getting constantly ganked while trying to learn. Hope to be an active and contributing player here with Mobius PVE.

I'm in North Texas and play central time zone. Still really green and could use a mentor.

I would be happy to help you progress in the game, but I don't know if our play times will align. I work weird hours and typically play E-D on the weekends in the early morning (like 2-6AM) and afternoon. If you are on during those times, I'd be happy to wing up with you or answer questions via game chat or TeamSpeak.

I got my Teamspeak set up and verified and all is well with a mic check in a channel that had members in it at the time. I got back in game later in the day (5p Central) and realized the most active channel of members, RiffRaffs Pub, had well established players and were in the middle of doing stuff. Now let me preface this by saying I tend to be overly considerate and non-disruptive to a point of fault but that's just my way around folks I don't know very well. So with that in mind... I'm trying to find the right way to wade into my Mobius Teamspeak experience, especially since I'm coming in mid-stream in an already well established group. I'm looking for tips on timing, phases, or protocol.

Should I wait to use teamspeak with others from Mobius PVE group until I've reached a certain level of experience? It's almost like trying to get a job if you've never had one... you need experience before you get one, but until you've got one you have no experience. I don't think it's fair to others in channel for me just to jump in at this point asking a bunch of newb questions and disrupt the current activity, hence the inquiry.

I've got most of the basics down but I'm finding that many of the missions I try result in failure due to prerequisites, i.e., can't get a route to certain systems because I need an upgraded FSD (had to google that to figure it out) discard that mission until I can afford FSD upgrade, i.e., can't bounty hunt or do cleaning missions without interdiction device. Not sure I'd know how to use it. There are likely other mission types that will result in "you need to do this before you can do that, or you need this ship mod before you can do that" , I'm finding that my play time has become, go try something, fail, go search forums and websites to try to find answer, try that, rinse and repeat.

I think I already know the answer to most of this and that is ...keep learning offline (I'm currently digesting "Tips and Tricks for a brand new player") which has already helped a bunch, keep practicing what I learn offline...online, and continue to leverage other resources like youtube, Inara and elitetradingtool.co.uk, etc.

Or is it possible that I just hang out in an empty channel in Teamspeak and hope that someone has the time and inclination to wing up with a newb and give tips and answer questions? Is there a recommended channel for doing this? This approach is obviously a bit of a shortcut and I'm not looking for game spoilers but it's a bit frustrating when you have limited play time. I know how difficult it is to coordinate online game time with others so I can be patient for whatever works best. I should be good to go if I could just spend a few hours with a vet. Thanks!

Frankly I'd just wade in, introduce yourself, say that you are new to the game and see how it goes.

The first few hours of the game are the hardest, do feel free to ask as many questions in the forum as you wish, no one is born knowing this stuff and we all had to start from scratch at one point.

My advice to anyone starting out is to start small, it's easy to get caught up in the threads that talk about big trade or combat payouts, but those come with time, I remember my first few hours was doing things like hauling biowaste or food, work on getting some money even if its not glamourous or exciting, then concentrate on upgrading your ship modules, don't worry about changing ship too soon, get what you have to at least C grade with an A grade FSD.

When you've got a decent buffer of money upgrade the other modules, but don't over do it until you have a sufficient power plant.

When you do come to upgrade to another ship, remember the single most important rule - "don't fly what you can't afford to insure".

And remember, there is no shame in running away, any good Commander knows that it's better to live to fight another day.

ED takes time, there is no short route (although some are faster than others), take your time, enjoy the ride and before you know it you'll be deciding whether you should be buying a Conda, Vette or Cutter

Ask lots of questions, there are no stupid questions, and everyone is always happy to offer advice.

Feel free to jump in on TS, let the guys know that you're new and have a couple of questions. A few guys should offer to help. If the channel is busy it may be best to jump to another channel with a few guys that have time to answer your questions.

Also, as you mentioned the 'tips and tricks' thread contains a wealth of information! Take it all in, a bit at a time.

Regarding BB missions, you should be able to successfully complete cargo missions. The system won't let you accept ones that are for more cargo than you can carry. With a smaller FSD it will a few more jumps to reach your destination, but as long as your fuel tank is large enough or you have a fuel scoop, you'll be good to go.

Also, I've sent you an in-game friend request. Once you accept it, if we're in game at the same time I can help answer questions for you via game chat or TS.

Also... post questions on the board that you haven't found answers to yet (Google is awesome!) and one of our friendly group members will steer you in the right direction as soon as possible.
