No external view (a crying shame)

Postby GlobusDiablo » Tue Jan 27, 2015 12:19 am

Is it just me, or is it absolutely infuriating that we can never see what our ships look like from the outside. And don't say I can see it in outfitting, because I can't. I can't even clear the screen of menus so I could have a look. Or maybe be able to strafe and zoom around it?

Sometimes when outfitting, I have no clue where the hardpoint actually is, because I can't see where it is on the ship.

And how about some kind of external cam for when leaving spaceports, or cruising past friends?

I don't care that we never get a third person view, but for the love of God, let us behold our spacemachines in all their glory, if only in outfitting.

I know this has been talked about before, but I haven't heard anything from FD on the subject.

I agree it would be nice to look around our ships hull.

It does make buying new skins kind of pointless if you can't get to see it properly. :(

They are looking at it:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthrea ... post673649

But it's low priority and there aren't immediate plans for implementation:

Once they implement it, I'll consider buying paint jobs.

Thanks Commander. You must have Godlike powers to trawl that thread for those two posts.... ;)

So, bad news is, well bad news I guess...

I can see why they would go against a 3rd person mode. The perspective of being a "commander" and never leaving the helmet view outside of the shop. Immersion I guess. Some argue that it could give an advantage in dogfights. It would be nice to have a "theater" mode or something similar. Perhaps where you cant do it during combat or maybe can't do it while moving, but you can do a proper interior and exterior view like Assetto Corsa and many other racing games do their theatre views. Maybe even use backdrops of screenshots or pre-programmed locations like AC does.

Example of AC showroom view of cars: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWHIBO1KEp8

Or an option to save a replay of the last 30 minutes or so, with the ability to watch it from a 3rd person perspective...
