Conflict zone appearance

I found an Empire system with several RESs and decided to camp there for a bit. I was hoping to see rank progression BB missions when I went to the station to resupply between bounty hunting stints. I've been there longer than usual (about a week now) because nobody has yet turned unfriendly despite me cashing in about 14M in bounties.

Anyway - last night, the system was full of conflict zones (high and low intensity). I can't see any particular reason for it - there's only been one CMDR through in the past 24 hours, and there's nothing in Galnet. I can't imagine it's anything to do with me.

Do CZs appear randomly?

Do CZs appear randomly?

CZs appear when two factions in the system go to war or civil war. If you look at the right hand panel where it lists the factions in that sector, then go to the right one (I use hotas, sorry), it lists the factions and their percent influence in that sector. It also shows what 'state' they are in...boom, civil war, lockdown, etc. If you select a faction in that list, it will also show if they have any 'pending' states and gives a description of them.
