... because, as soon as the 'pirate hunt' CG @ Bast is over, I'm planning to tootle over to Alioth to fit up an Asp & head on out into the Big Black for the very first time. (Every ship I've owned so far, I've sold even the default discovery scanner before she hit the black.)

I'm too much of a combat pilot to completely do without shields'n'gunz (I'm a fighter, not a runner ;) ) but seeing what others have had success with certainly makes my choices easier. Selling my trusty Cobra (what's the point in having a ship parked up somewhere you won't use it for a month?) should leave me around 32 mill to spend, which I hope is enuff for a good build.

I've already resigned from the Hudson faction, having decided that PP just doesn't suit my psyche at all

You should get a very good build for an asp for 32 mil :D

32mil?! You can buy AND fit 2 exploration Asps for that :D

Head over to diaguandri and your fit with the ship should be around 13-16mil with the discounts

I've seen builds that are a LOT more than that! I don't have enough for what I THINK I need without selling the 'bra, and anyway I'd rather have the money than a ship half a galaxy away from where I might need it.

Didn't know diaguandri was an option, but that Alioth has big (20%?) discount on Asp - and it's the only permit I have!

I'll see which is closer to Bast when the CG is over 8-)

Diaguandri only has 15% off the ship but it also has 15% off of everything else as well, that comes in nicely when you want that 28 mil fuel scoop..

With the discount at diaguandri my Asp was right at $20 mil. I've been out in deep space for a couple of days and am loving it! The Asp rocks for exploration. :D

Nothing like watching a 45 minute video to learn a checklist of four items.

Use D rated equipment, apart from FSD.
No need for guns or shields.
Downgrade thrusters, powerplant and power distribution class.
Bring scanners and a good fuel scoop (duh)

As long as you throttle down between jumps no real need for heatsinks or maintenance kits.
But there are close orbiting binaries out there and eventually mistakes happen, rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
AFU's like scoops have no weight you can fill up with as many as you want.

Until thargoids populate the galaxy that's all there is too it, and I have now saved you 44 minutes of your life.

That's a bit harsh, TT.

There's a lot more to exploring than just buying a ship, and that guy covers a LOT that I didn't know. I've watched it twice, and written down some notes about (esp) where to fuel up & what data it's worth going after.

I like his comparisons of the effects on jump range of doing various things - like weapons & shields - and his reasoning behind choices.

Anyway, I can't set off on my big adventure until Thursday (probably) & I can't spend EVERY spare minute hunting down pirates so I consider it time well spent.

OK, the CG must have gotten WELL caned since Thursday, it's over :(

So... it's off to Alioth for me right now. (Half the journey of Diaguandri)

Farewell trusty Cobra "Merlin III" & hello to a shiny new Asp Explorer which will be dubbed "Rocinante"
