Not tried it myself, but I would imagine the Hauler would be a good cheap starting point, get rid of some of the Storage and replace with a couple of refineries. Also got a good central laser point under the ship.

Like I said I haven't tried, but I would probably start like this to see how it went, if i didn't like it I could sell the refineries and go back to Trading.

Can you fit a class 2 mining laser in a hauler? I didn't when I had that ship but did when I got a cobra. It sped things up a hell of a lot. Other than that...make sure you get a refinery with at least 4 bins or you'll be dumping stuff left, right and center. Well, mainly right but there you go...

I used a Cobra, in b3. I could load up to 32 tons of stuff, plus 4 to 6 extra tons in the refinery, and I could still defend myself against the pirate NPC that were after my palladium. I made half a million Cr with a full load of palladium.

Like Flip above, I mined a lot in Beta 3 using the Cobra. I steadily upgraded the refinery once I'd found a good metal rich location.

Again, it's nice and relaxing as long as you don't go to resource extraction sites - unless you want a bit of pew-pew action! As mentioned you can take a bit of damage with the Cobra as you decide to run or fight.

Cobra as the starting point I would think, you can have a couple of mining lasers and still have a couple of "proper" lasers or cannons for defence / fighting. After that the Asp would make an amazing mining ship but it's a lot more expensive.

So how do I find those high % palladium roids?
In metallic rings? Does the system allegiance/population have any influence?

Yes, in metallic rings and belts. You can see their richness by selecting them in the system map. That goes something like pristine, major reserves, common reserves, poor and depleted, IIRC.
