How it all begun

Postby styx » Wed Dec 14, 2016 7:21 pm

In 1986 I bought my first computer. A Schneider (Armstrad) CPC6128 with green monitor. The computer was on sale and came with Elite. At the time I had absolutely no clue what I am getting my self into. I put the diskette in, switched on the computer and started Elite. I played straight for 18 hours with the occasional bathroom break. After that I was hooked. And not only that. From that time on I started to have an interest in software development. I played Elite until I reached the rank Elite CMDR. Software engineering took over and I had not much time for playing anymore. I missed all the sequels to Elite.

In 1999 I started to play again. This time XBtF. I played all the versions until this year. And I played every one of them up to the rank of Xtreme. Every time when I started a new version, there were 6 of them, I had to start from the beginning. So, I am used to grinding.

2 Years ago my wife told me that Elite makes a comeback. So I bought the Beta but did not play until September this year. I was still busy with X3 Albion Prelude. A game which has no end either. Then I started to play Elite. And I have to say that this is almost no game anymore. While the X-Series are great games, there is just no comparison. Flying a ship in X is like playing with a toy car whereas flying a ship in Elite is like driving a real car. You are not tempted to do anything stupid in Elite, because if you do you pay for it. Not like in X where you save, screw things up and reload. Every time when I am in a fight my pulse gets up. This is almost like a Parallel Universe. I know I am exaggerating a bit here. But this is just how I feel. Good that we don’t have holo-decks, yet. Because if we would, my normal life would end right here, right now. And I would never get out of that holo-deck.

At the moment I am on the way back to Colonia with my AspX. My Anaconda is already there. And I saved enough to be able to transfer my FdL and equipment too. Although I am not certain whether I should waste 111,000,000 cr for the FdL transfer. Colonia will be my new homebase from where I explore the galaxy. I think I have something like 5 weeks playtime. I am not sure. But it has been a blast so far.

I just have to be careful that Elite does not take over my job as a software engineer. lol

Fly safe, CMDR’s.

Best,
Styx

Sounds to me you should never ever ever try Elite in VR...

Hey I'm Thor -
People call me Bob.

Rule 1: Pillage. Then burn.
Rule 2: No such thing as overkill, as long as there are reloads.

Yep, I totally agree. Problem is, my wife has a DK2. And soon she will get a Rift for her birthday. Looks like I am screwed.
