I always thought that once you landed the engines shutdown and you go into a sort of battery use state. So you don't use up fuel.

You use less since the thrusters power off, but you can still see your hourly consumption in the right hand HUD info panel.
For a corvette, this might be the difference of 0.5t per hour, but that's most likely going from 3 to 2.5 used per hour.

Of course it varies with loadout, but the more power you use, the more fuel you consume just staying still.
So with everything running a stock 32t tank is empty in under 10 hours.
If you on the other hand turn everything off but life support you should knock consumption down to under 0.1t hourly and you can suddenly sit around for 13 days.

Also regardless of ship, if you disable mods until you hit less than 10% heat, your cockpit will frost over :D

Altough, if you deploy into the SRV, the ship goes into some weird game mechanic freeze and doesn't consume fuel.
Think there has been times when a few people have managed to stave of death from running out of life support by landing and going into the buggy.

Rule 1: Pillage. Then burn.
Rule 2: No such thing as overkill, as long as there are reloads.

This is the standard explorer strategy if you get a canopy breach in the middle of nowhere: Land, go into your buggy, dismiss your ship, log out, log back in, recall the ship, and board it. The canopy should be closed again, and you can repair it using an AFM. I know of at least one case during GNE where a commander saved himself from death using this strategy after a 'landing attempt with a large potential for improvement'.

However, this was in 2.1, no idea if this still works in 2.2. I tried in 2.2 beta, but I had the problem that I was either unable to break my canopy on purpose, or my AspX refused to land near the planetary base where I was conducting the tests.

SO this leads me to the question, How much time do you have when landed on a planet or simply drifting assuming you have a full tank of gas, that you will run out? What is the consumption rate on idle?

Can you shut off all systems and not consume fuel?

The fuel consumption rate is displayed right above the fuel bar, and that is in tons per hour. You can see the size of your fuel tank in outfitting. Everything else is simple mathematics.
