I can sort of see why they did it this way, the timing of solving the clues determined when the next clue would appear, and whilst it could have been scripted NPCs, using a real CMDR makes it more flexible. I suspect that the clues would have changed depending on how quickly they were being solved, too quickly make them more obscure, too slowly make them easier (this assumes of course that the timescale was to finish it yesterday evening), this equally means that it would only work in open.

As for the SDC et al, hopefully Walter is correct and FD will lose patience with them.

Yes. Having a real CMDR would make things flexible. But looking at the screen shots, it seems as if they were reading from a script. And according to some posts on the mega thread, the IP of the CMDR was from France. So unless the actors were given multiple scripts, I don't know how flexible they could actually be with their clues. And the given clues do seem to be just part 1 of 2. The second part being given after the CG.

As for the SDC, I'm not sure what FD can actually do about them. They were in Open, playing the game within the rules. FD made those rules and decided that Open should be "anything goes." There would be a major uproar from the rest of the community if FD suddenly turned around and told people that you can only play in Open, how we want you to play.

Dawg and I headed over to see the Hype for ourselves.
