It's certainly something you need to learn to fly through. That's one reason a lot of traders grinding that last 600 million or more doing the fast speed runs will use the docking computer to compensate for all that jazz.
Worse than the Federal Drop Ship (FDS)?
I heard the FDS is the worst of the middle pad ships, and still worse than all but a Type-9 and maybe 1-2 others of the large. Again, call me sadistic, but I love flying the FDS. In fact, I like turning Flight Assist (FA) off with it. I think it was that Dynamics course in college.

I'm sure this scenario is familiar for you too: Getting closer to the mailslot, flying a bit over the speedlimit and the authorities ram you. Then they slap a fine for you as it was YOUR fault that the cop was DUI. And just hope that the little Viper survives the hit, otherwise the station slaughters you to that spot. With DC turned on, the red [speeding] light turns off even if the computer boosts towards the station clearly over the speedlimit.
It's 100 no matter where you are too! I mean, I literally "belly flop" that FDS sometimes on the pad! It should be a speed limit of only 15-25 near the pad, but it's not. It's still 100!

To avoid the overshoot, so sometimes I'll undershoot.
bounce ... (sometimes
bounce again ...) "Docking Successful." I literally am doing 75-90 and come down hard. Sometimes I hit it just right coming down, and dock. Other times it's too hard and I bounce, or undershoot and end up keeping the forward thrusters going to bounce it forward.

Why is it not 15-25 once you get above the pad? Don't know. And until then, as long as I only lose 10% of shields and even that pathetic, 3rd ring is still there on the FDS, I'll keep doing it. It's fun ... especially when I get it perfect!

But yes, I agree on the grinding in the Federation is easier. I'm still just a Petty Officer, but I'm not even trying. I just tend to be in Federation-aligned commercial ports, selling my Osmium, Platinum and Painite on the boards for 60-100K/ton. That and killing most fools who try to interdict me, and happen to be wanted by a Federation-aligned party.
In fact ...

... the Federal Corvette is the reason I am slowly, but surely, ranking up in the Federation without trying. I figure I'll have close to the rank required by the time I get the cash. I'm probably just going to stay Python until then, at least
once I buy my Python in another 5M (related thread).
Falcon_D wrote:Tried it for awhile on the Cutter and my Python thinking it would save me time while doing a well known trade route. Could always plan the next jump while the ship was docking. But realized after awhile that I just didn't need it. More cargo, more money. So the DC got replaced with an ADS for when I want to do some long distance, not done before trade route.
That was my only reason for considering one, so I could plan my next route while it docks. But given all of the non-sense people have had with the DC, I haven't bothered. I like the space too.
