Also at Jaques, having a cold one at the bar. Return route will be the offical Convoy sight-seeing route.

NIce. Once I arrived, I REALLYa just wanted to get back to the bubble already.. I am ready to do something else, and I miss my SRV and Corvette.

About 1400LY away from Jaques already. My updates are going to be jumps-until-home now, since the LY thing is daunting and discourages my progress.

900 Jumps 'til Home.

544 Tonnes delivered. Geez.. I need a break.. especially considering I just found out I can't repair and restock at Jaques. Wow, 22000LY back.. :o

Jaques won't share his meta-alloys. Jaques won't share. He failed Kindergarten.

Darr Valen wrote:I more than likely will end up with a 27-32" 1440p monitor with a high refresh rate. I'd prefer a gsync/freesync module so that I can have varying frame rates without being locked to 60.

Yeah, I totally agree with you there. I'm still waiting for true, 120Hz 40"+ TVs -- HDMI 2.0 input and true, 8ms refresh. Nothing seems to be out there.

The 21:9 aspect gets weird, but if you go with a 29" 2560x1080, you can still get standard 1920x1080 in 16:9 aspect that feels like a 24"+.

Darr Valen wrote:The Occulus is/was just too much for what it is, which is a partial system. If it was the more reasonable $450 with HMD only, fine, I'd have bought it that morning. But it wasn't, and $599 is too much for what it is, or more aptly, isn't.

I actually love it. I sat back, realized it had the best Elite support, I'm only going to play Elite to start, in a small, 10x10 "man cube" (not so much cave).

It gives me time to wait on the Gen2 Vive to improve, before I punk down nearly $1K for that system. I haven't regretted my choice. I'll eventually ge tthe Vive, and put that in the living room where I can have closer to a 15x15' play area. I hope they do co-opt in Elite. My wife just likes watching me explore in the game.

Darr Valen wrote:My ideal screen would be a curved 34" 21:9 screen that functions at 1440p or higher, as I love the immersion that you start getting with curved/ultrawide screens.
I know plenty might call curved a gimmick, but I enjoy it. It does add something when viewing. My JS9000's curve is subtle, but it does change how you view things. It's not as curved as it could be.. but I think it improves over a flat LCD panel.

Curved is best for a single viewer. It sucks for multi-viewer. I'd never buy a curved TV for the living room. But it's great for a workstation or single (or close couple) viewing.

Darr Valen wrote:I'm aware of the horrible state of windows scaling. It's one of the reasons I'm not UHD'ing this year on PC. 2106 is the year of UHD on tv, 2017 for PC. though I got my UHD in 2015.. regardless.

For those us running Linux on our PCs, we have no issues whatsoever.

Did you know, the 1080 is a whopping 1.7 times faster? That's a pisspoor increase for a card that is barely hitting 92FPS in a game released this year. It's already old.

The 10 series and the Tesla GPUs are really about die shrinks and yields.
That's why the GTX 1070 ~ GTX 980 Ti, and GTX 1080 is only about 33% faster than the GTX 980 Ti ... even in VR.

For now, they are very simple compared to the prior 9 series and Pascal. I'm waiting for either the GTX 1080 Ti or the 11 series. That's when we'll really see what it's capable of. But right now they are very small, and likely with higher yields on the newer TSMC process. They can definitely get more GPUs per wafer, and that's key to costs.

But the 10 series is much, much cooler and less power hungry. That is for certain! The GTX 1070 is a GTX 970 in power and thermals for GTX 980 Ti performance.

Does that rate apply to orbital mining, too? Right before my trip out of the bubble I already had to drop things like sulphur, iron and so on once each hour, because i collected over 100 per hours with the limpets. I hope it doesnt get worse...

I haven't tried it with mining yet. But I'm going to have to get some Painite at some point to unlock whats-her-name.

Ziptek wrote:Maybe it's a good plan to continue exploring... Ive reached my planned system about 4,4 kLYs away from sol. I think i will go for the 5 kLYs for Palin (which is not known to me right now).

That's my view. My 2nd Level 3 FSD Range roll got me +22%, which was a pretty good roll. Same with my 1st Level Power Overcharge at +5.6%. I'm going to not bother grinding, and just exploring and unlocking engineers in various ways as come about, not purposely.

I mean, I literally want to get Level 3 with as many engineers as I can to unlock others, and when commodities or things come along that they use, then and only then I'll look at them. I know that means I won't get much done in 2016 ... and that's just fine with me. I'm not grinding to be PvP l33t.

I'm going to keep going around my 500ly area, and then return to see what that nets at Farseeker, being Level 3 / 62% to 4 right now. After that, I'm liking going to go 5Kly out, and unlock Palin. Let me know if you want to hook up. I'm on US Eastern, but sometimes I play in the early mornings (late morning to noon UTC, evening Australian).

Jaques is an ass that won't share his metaterials.

Curved is great for a single viewer. It engrosses you. My family doesn't tend to watch stuff together, so an awesome curved UHD tv works great for whoever might be using it.

Not saying the Gen 1 Consumer RElease HMDs are bad.. but the price is shit for the Rift especially considering what isn't included. $450, not 600. That's a fair price. They're selling you the software suite/environment it'll run on as if they're doing you a favor. That's like samsung's appstore bloatware being considered a value.

I run Mint, but I am too lazy to switch over these days, and I prefer the ease of gaming on w10. I have 7 on my old 840 SSD for older games.

898 Jumps left. Just got back to the KB.

Considering Facebook-Oculus totally screwed up their logistics, they needed the +$150 for the added overhead. But yeah, had they got it right, it should have been under $500.

Although virtually every major gaming engine is on Linux, and it's still the premier platform for everything from gaming development to movie editing and processing, not every house is going to want to support consumers on a 2nd platform, as they won't drop Windows overnight.

Although it does erk me when they support MacOS X, when Valve has the statistics. Especially when Apple is so far behind on OpenGL support, that Linux, not Apple, could support Horizons. Everything is there, but they won't. It's much cheaper to support Linux than Windows, but it's still a 2nd platform beyond Windows ... yet they are doing it for Apple.

We'll see where everything is headed long-term with Valve. Microsoft keeps trying to destroy them, but they have screwed up every attempt, largely due to punting it and outsourcing. So now they're back to using the OS to force it (Windows 10). I want a HTC Vive because Linux will be supported as a peer. The only time Microsoft does anything right is when they keep it in-house, like with Azure ... which, ironically, relies on a lot of key Linux infrastructure.

The funny thing is that Oculus not only had a lot of Linux-based DK support, but Facebook itself is heavily Linux (was at Red Hat when Facebook begging for support when they needed support, as they were on CentOS). And they've shut down that entire avenue, stupidly so. Trust me, I'm no Oculus fan, much less Facebook.

4364 LY away from Jaques, parked for the night at waypoint 9, with a neutron star just a couple LS away.

Got a crappy round of Sothis/Ceos missions so decided to give up and leave with what I could, ~ 15M maybe. Currently docked for the night with 4 deliveries to make before stocking up on supplies for....whatever station is in Maia. Then either back over to Ceos or shuttling more supplies. Should be less painful now that I've acquired a 5A FSD for the newly acquired Python.
