A RES is a Resource Extraction Site. They exist in Ringed Planets which are moderately common among populated systems.

The involve flying to the RES, then you fly in and around the Ring system basically hunting down pirates pirating on the miners. It's not a bad introduction to bounty hunting, there are usually plenty of police vessels around to help out and generally speaking you can bug out to a near by space station if it all goes horribly wrong (usually if you pick on someone a lot bigger than you are)

Easy way to take on the big scary ships is follow them around slowly while the police whittle them down - scan them and stuff while you wait, then when they're at low hull you fire off a couple of shots and by that point they shouldn't have enough time to shoot you a lot before they get blown up :D. You don't have to do anything besides hit them once to get the bounty - I've shot stuff that the police are blasting and then changed targets and started going after something else and had a "bounty awarded" message for the thing I pewed slightly :D.

RESs will only show up in your nav list from 1,000Ls away or less. if you're trying to find one at a certain system/planet, you need to be closer than that.

NPCs don't mind when you do this, but Commanders get quite cross when you steal kills in this way.
Don't forget to wait until your ship has scanned your target and the red WANTED tag is added to the target's info, or the consequences can be awkward.

Awkward? :D

Love the understatement!

I've only been with another commander once in an RES and we were winged up specifically to go and do an RES. Otherwise I've never seen anyone other than NPCs. Also, how is firing a single shot kill-stealing? I suppose if it's the final shot...does only the one who fires the killing shot get credit, then (unless you're winged)? Or is it done on who dealt the most damage (in which case there'd be no point in shooting them once anyway) which is how these things normally work, in my experience?

Last projectile that damages the enemy ship will be rewarded to the shooter in question, at least in my experience. I'm not sure how exactly do the rewards get split when in a wing though.

I think it's anyone in the wing who got at least one shot on target gets an equal share regardless of who does the majority of damage.

As to kill stealing, I have had it the other way round where I've done the majority of damage on an Anaconda and an NPC got the final shot in and I went without a credit in pay-out. It's a lot less likely for that to happen now than in earlier releases.
