Help with new Sound Setup

Postby Loriath » Mon Jul 20, 2015 10:19 am

I asked this on Reddit as well, but I am asking here because I really need some help:

I normally play with a headset and am quite happy with my current setup, but there are times I want to play with my speakers. Problem is, they are crap. I bought the cheapest set of 2.1's I could find here in Switzerland at the time (About 4 years ago). The sound scape in ED is so good that I really want it to be a bit better for the times I am not slogging headphones around.

I am looking to upgrade, and I need a little bit of advice. In my Budget I have 2-3 choices. The choices the Logitech Z333 , Edifier M1380 , or the Edifier Predator.

Anything is gonna be an upgrade, but I want to get something that will give me some decent sound. I am not looking for Earth Shattering Bass, just some good even sound with decent range. I play a bit of Music on the PC, but mostly it is for Games. I cant afford more than what these are costing, and I have no room for 5.1 systems though more and more people are suggesting them.

Anyone got any advice on any of these three models? These are in my budget, I cannot justify spending more than these will cost locally. Switzerland is expensive ;)

I have no experience with any of these, but I can just give you my 2-cents.

I think Logitech makes great keyboards and mice, but I have owned Logitech speakers in the past and have not been overly impressed. And on this model, I'd be worried of kicking out the sub woofer speaker with it exposed like that (I keep sub woofers under my desk). To be fair, I've only owned cheaper 2-speaker systems, and this looks like a better build quality and has the most power.

The Edifier Predator just looks too weird and plastic for me, but I suppose the satellites look OK.

I prefer the classic look of the Edifier M1380 and the sub woofer would be safe from my big feet. It seems to get pretty good, although mixed, reviews. I also like that it has a wood (MDF) sub woofer enclosure rather than plastic on many cheaper models (Z333 is also wood).

Good luck with whatever you choose - and enjoy. :)
It's time to give this another go.

Thanks Roger. The sub is not an issue as with 2 dogs, it goes on my desk ;)

I am hoping to hear the three units later this week, if not next before I decide. The set I have now is so cheap that my Bluetooth Mono speaker I got on sale at Aldi has better sound. I tried putting my sound card output through it and it had more bass, was clearer, and louder, which means ANYTHING will be an upgrade :)

If you usually fly a clipper, you've no choice. You need to get those predators (in white).

Just a quick Update:

I picked up the Logitech Z333 speakers this morning. They are most definitely an upgrade, and sound a lot better than the other choices I had listed. They provide more than enough volume and bass for me. I actually prefered the sound of these over my other choices. And the fact they include a secondary input is a nice thing I didn't think about till I got them home and hooked them up. And the best part is that the Normal Price here was 65 CHF and I picked up a pair at a local shop for 48 CHF.

Although the Edifier M1380 had a decent sound, I found it lacked a full bass sound. It sounded muddy to me without filling out the sound. The Predators were tinny and had very little separation when playing my music from my source (that is how I tested them all).

So for my ear, the Z333's won out. Yes there are much better options, but not at this price range here. And the lower price I found them for was a bonus. I plan on taking that cash and buying the Logitech Bluetooth speaker adapter so I can flip my podcasts through the speakers whenever I want.

Thanks for all of you who replied.

Personally, I use a Pioneer amplifier (VSX-520K) with TOSLINK from my onboard MSI 970 Gaming board. I've also owned many Creative Labs products in the past, and found their support for operating system releases to be less than adequate. It seems they really push you to buy the "latest and greatest" of their hardware constantly even if you've previously spent upwards of $200 on a sound card product from them. (in other words, no real ROI to speak of)

I run mine in 5.1 surround optical- and when I use my headphones they work just fine, too. The most recent Creative product I've found that gives you "bang for your buck" is the Omni Surround 5.1 which can run optical out as well as analog- which Windows 10 support just recently became available for. It's mid-range in price (less than 100 but more than 50) but will certainly run you a lot less than the new series they're trying to pawn off on people. (A USB DAC is a USB DAC, regardless if it poses as a huge subwoofer or not)
