Huge journey, ending up at NGC 7822 Nebula

Postby Mattwood » Tue Sep 15, 2015 12:47 pm

Set out exploring after being inspired by quick google of "Largest known stars", starting at Betelgeuse, heading over to Canis M, making a stop down at Barnards(thanks johnluke for the suggestion!) and then heading over to Al Radif and VV Cephei! navigating through a seemingly endless field of brown dwarves, countless "Oh crap i need fuel" stops.

NGC 7822 was my final stop on this journey, and it's absolutely beautiful.. There's a crazy amount of stars per system (One system had around 10 other stars, albeit some are quite a distsance away) and also an abundance of black holes, some systems have 2 or 3 black holes that I’ve found up to now (For example, S171 9 has 3 black holes in a tight orbit that are around 600m years old)

I'd recommend that everyone goes to take a look at the supergiants, it is a shame that you drop in and they pretty much look like any other star, but you do realise the sheer size when you realise you're scooping at 2kls from it.

Has anyone been to NGC7822? I did find it a pain to get there initially and a high jump range is key, the systems out here are quite spread out and i think the easiest way to access is to come up from underneath it.

I'm currently working through all the systems there, would love some suggestions on where to head out? for example any other supergiants/nebulas.

NGC 7822 is on my list for when I go on my next trip bud. Fnding a supergiant even if its been scanned is like finding an Earth like for me.

Fly safe :)

Highly recommend it, saw my first black hole out here and can't seem to stop seeing them now. Agree with the comment on supers, the ones i mentioned have obviously been discovered previously but it doesn't take away from it at all.

You too o7

Love exploring and love seeing the different types and alignment of stars. A triple star system is no big deal, even when all 3 are relatively close to each other, but when I first started exploring I didn't know how common it was. So when I came across my first one I made a quick video:

Now I see them everywhere...oh well

Wow, awesome video mate, i've not seen any systems like that one yet, it's all so close together.

Loving the HUD btw :D

I have however just finished going through all the main stars in the NGC 7822 Nebula and theres some pretty wacky orbits there, black holes orbiting stars at 6LS etc.

Thanks CMDR. This system that I discovered had 3 that were even closer...

As a bonus, those O type stars and black holes have a high value in exploration CR's.

Hello,

Has any explorer come across any newly forming planets, deformed planets, shattered planets (from collision with other celestial bodies), stars being stripped of their gas from a neighboring black hole?

I've been traveling around only a small portion of the galaxy in game and have not wondered out of the bubble yet, so I'm just asking out of curiosity. And also, wondering how rich, the Elite Dangerous simulation of, the galaxy is?

Thanks and regards.
Have fun, fly safe.

Falcon, In terms of close orbit stars and planets, I've seen some really close orbiting binary + systems, but not seen any material exchanged between them.
I think the best is a Type F (I think) with a close Gas Giant that had a White dwarf in even closer orbit to it.
I got some pics and a vid, I'll post them when I find them :), my last trip totalled something like 3000 screen shots lol.

Nothing like boldly going ... :)

Ahhh that screenshot is beautiful, the way you got the engine trails in there aswell as a spiral, brilliant :D

I think i'll go check that system out, any problems when dropping out of hyper? wouldn't want to end up in a 3 star sandwich!

I haven’t seen anything odd yet, although i've been fast-tracking away from NGC to a supergiant that i had hoped wasn't already discovered, but it was :( I'll be sure to post a screenshot if i do find anything!

And NGC 7822 is full of em. £££££!

On a side note, does anyone know if planets with atmospheres (co2/ammonia) bring in more CR than your standard rock?
