Mining Malaise

So yesterday I finally scraped together enough credits to purchase an Asp, I figured an improvement to my trusty Cobra.
Trading, some bounty hunting and enough modules left to throw some mining equipment in there too without having to turn tail and run every time an npc comes calling. First trip out, I have 6-7 tons of various metals. So far so good. A mistake on my part (ok I crashed into a big rock) and lost it all. 2 hours down the tube. Second time out, much better I make about 10k from a few pieces - but the overall experience wasn't great.
Sold the Asp and went back to the Cobra. Question though, will I get hauler/bh missions that pay as much as these mining missions seem to at the moment because it seems I'm missing out on hefty earnings by avoiding mining?

Mining on the whole is not something to engage in if you are looking at credits per hour, you can pick up bh and hauling missions that pay more than the mining ones and con be done in a fraction of the time. But then some people like mining.

Then again some people try mining in an ASP.......
Which is the greatest multi function ship ever invented......
Apart from mining that is............
Might as well go exploring in an Eagle............

Were you using limpets? If not you should. You'll need a prospector controller and a collector controller. Prospect the 'roid first as it gives up more goodies.
Then use the collector(s), but don't target anything when using the collectors, just fire them out and they'll do their stuff.
Limpets make the whole thing easier, but even then there's more money in other activities.

Sounds like you're not mining a good location. Try the system Bhare, 3rd planet, closest ring to the planet. Mine roids with Platinum, Palladium, Painite and Osmium and ignore all the rest, then tour round all the nearby high tech systems and cash in from mining missions.

Seems like I'll need to have two ships - one for trading/mining. The other for bounty hunting. A type 6 and a vulture for example. Hooray, more grind!

Only if you want to, don't do stuff you don't want, life's too short

I've used an Asp for mining before, no problem. I think a good combo would be a level 3 refiner & collector controller with a level 1 (or 2 if it exists) prospector limpet controller, if you can afford them. Take loads of limpets, they are cheap and you can always discard them if you need the space.

Be careful when discarding limpets, I did this and the collector just started picking them up again

Cheers all, I've got a Vulture and a Type 6. The 6 has a lot of space, but not much room for decent modules. Still, I've found a metal rich ring with minimal interference from npcs and have a few tons of stuff so far.
I could solve it by ditching the shield, but flying without shields...especially in a craft without offensive capability. I'll work my way back up to a superior craft in time.
