Elite: Dangerous PvE - Mobius

I attempted to make my first run this evening. While in the station I selected a mission to carry some cargo to another close by system. The payoff was supposed to be about 2,000 CR. After I accepted the mission the cargo was automatically loaded into my Sidewinder. It was some sort of Animal product. I traveled to the receiving system and docked at the station specified in the mission. I then noticed that I had a fine of 2,000 CR in the system I came from and the goods were labelled STOLEN. Now I'm sitting in the hanger and I have no idea how to get the stolen cargo out of my hold. I tried selling it at Beagle 2 the station I'm at but they are not buying.

What I find confusing is that I thought it was a transport mission so I didn't expect to have to pay for the cargo. Now it I have a fine in Errain system.

I have a couple of questions:

1 - Any ideas how I can get rid of the cargo in my hold?
2 - How are transport missions supposed to work? What did I do wrong?

All advice would be appreciated

1. You will have to jettison the cargo or sell it on the black market. If a station has a black market it will be under contacts in the space station menu. Freeport has a black market, that's L 98-132. With stolen goods in the hold avoid scans by system authority vessels.

2.There have been a few bugs around missions in the past, But always look at the time to complete a mission, it sounds like you took a mission with a short time to completion, some come up with only a minute remaining, which are of course impossible to complete. Depending on the mission, if it goes out of time you get a fine.

A good clue is usually the price being offered, if it's quite high for what seems a fairly short run it usually means there is a limited time window in which to complete it.

Since its my first flight if I wanted to start with a clean slate how do I do that?

Is the option to delete a save still there?

Yup, sounds like you picked up a mission with a short time period. Hopefully not as short as this one though:

Somewhere in one of the main screen menus (it's moved from the main start one, thankfully), there should be a Clear Save option which'll let you start from scratch.
