Apologies, in-game comms seems terrible?

Apologies to those rare few people who have tried to greet me in-game, by the time I've noticed and try to reply I get an error that there are no valid communication targets! (it usually seems to happen whilst I'm fuel scooping, so I'm somewhat busy trying not to melt my ship)

I'm not sure if I'm just missing something or whether ED v1.0 is really that bad with player to player communication.

I don't even know how to message people. I know how to reply, but not to initiate comms.

Hmm, despite the risk of being called a troll, I'd say you're not missing anything. ;)

EDIT: Actually no, I'd take that risk on the official forum, but people here are too nice for that. :)

I don't even know how to message people. I know how to reply, but not to initiate comms.

When you press 2 (it's the default key, at least), the communication panel opens. It lists players in the same instance as you at the top, and your friend who are online bellow. You navigate in this panel the same way you navigate in the others. Select a player and validate, and you get two choices: text chat, or voice comm. Selecting one of these and validating should initiate a communication. However it often fails and apparently no one (not even the devs) know why.

The other way to open a comm channel with someone in your instance is to select them on your scanner or contact tab of the left panel, and press Return. It opens a text box where you can type. Pressing Return when you just got a message should also allow you to reply, but it doesn't always target the person you want to reply to. In this case, press 2 and find that person in the comm window.

And yeah, I also often miss incoming messages. Dunno why your ship computer doesn't tell you about them, somehow. :?

Hope this helps, anyway. :)

I contacted a Hauler and a Cobra in two different systems yesterday. Both were circling a star so fuel scooping is perfectly possible :D
I don't think anyone here has hard feelings against "not replying". Sometimes you're busy, other times when you try to reply the other party has activated the FSD and jumped away. When you're not in-game friends comms can be problematic at such moments. Don't worry zootlewurdle!

I don't always get replies from my messages. Sometimes I don't reply to messages as I'm unaware of them at the time. Sometimes people don't know how or haven't got a keyboard immediately to hand whilst using joystick combo or haven't set up key bindings. I don't think anyone's offended though. I'm certainly not :)

The best solution is to use the Mobius Teamspeak Servers. Problem solved :D

For instant comms between us this is best

The in-game voice comms I like as it has the delay factor and static caused by surrondings.

The text chat is pretty broken though, I understand that having a delay (similar to voice comm delay) but it should work eventually.
