An Elite Dangerous noob question

Greetings Commanders,

Since I bought the game only yesterday I have a couple questions. First I took a look at the player manual and I know that there is a way to list commander that have been detected in your area but I would like to know if there is a way to know that the ship you target is a npc or an actual player. Is there a color change or some sort of indicator when you target a player? Also I noticed in the Group Policy that there are Warzones. Is that a game mechanic or is it just a designated system?

Thanks again :)

On the scanner real commanders have hollow icons.
In the contact list they have CMDR prepended to the name.

Hey GuardStar,

Players are displayed in your scanner as hollow shapes (triangle when hardpoints are deployed and square when they aren't). Also their name is always preceded with "CMDR". NPC's appear as solid shapes in the scanner and don't have "CMDR" in front of their names.

War zones can appear in any system (as long as there's a war going on). They're similar to Resource Extraction Sites, in the sense that they only appear in your navigation list (left panel) when you get close to them. There are three different types of war zones: "low intensity", "high intensity" and "Capital ship" (the latter is more rare and requires the Empire to be involved).

Good luck, out there! Fly safe. :)
