To Type 7 or not to Type 7?

That is the question. ;)

I've had the cash to upgrade my Asp to a Type 7 for a few days now, but I'm balking at the prospect. I think every good trade route I've ever found has been between a station and an outpost. I'm worried that if I have to go station to station, maybe across several systems, or maybe involving several stations, it may not be worth it. I'd love to have the extra cargo capacity, but if takes twice as long to make only an extra 50 or 75 percent, then it's not worth it. But if the extra cargo more than makes up for longer or less profitable routes, then I guess I'll pull the trigger. :geek:

You know what I mean? Thoughts or experiences?

Thanks.

Haven't made enough cash to face this dilemma but I'd be tempted to stick with the Asp. My main reason is I like to mix up my game with a bit of bounty hunting now and then and I just don't think the Type 7 is up to it. The Asp on the other hand is a great combat ship. I think my next move from my Cobra will be to an Asp and then I'd like a clipper because it's very pretty and I'm an Imperial and should be flying pretty things :P

Had this very dilemma a couple of weeks ago when I came across a nice trade route - all station to station stuff, no outposts.

Sold my Asp and my kitted out Eagle and a Type 6 for somewhere over 23 mill. Bought a Type 7 with some upgrades and in less than a week i had made enough money to buy my Asp back and upgrade it a bit more (around 25 mill) - and also buy a fully tricked out Viper.

This was during the holidays and I had plenty time to play, so it was worth it for me. ;)

Will carry on trading and bounty hunting until I have enough for a Python - or maybe repeat what I did 2 weeks ago and sell everything and buy a Type 9 this time.

I bought a Type 7 last night to do the Siddah run (stored my Asp rather than selling it), and absolutely hated flying the thing. So this afternoon went back to where my Asp was and stripped the Type 7 and sold it then stripped the Asp and traded in for a Python.

The Asp is a much more fun ship than the T7 and combat when getting interdicted is much easier and quicker. Having said that though got interdicted 3 times in the T7, first was by a Cobra who I got to 30% before they ran away. The second was an Adder and the 3rd a Viper and blew both of those up and none of them cost me any repair bills.

It does get the job done and I think I had mine up to 208 cargo capacity but it handles like a brick.

An alternative to station-to-station trades is looking for a Seeking Luxuries site close to a high tech station. You're better off scouting for those in your Asp, though, before going for the T7.

I read this post, but I wish I remembered it. I'd decided to keep the Asp and grind until I could get a Python. I get 1.25Mcr/hr trading and only about 1Mcr/hr Seeking Luxuries. But with a T7 I should get about 1.8Mcr/hr Seeking Luxuries. I think I'll trade in the Asp in the morning for a T7 and should be in a Python sometime this weekend. :)

I love my Lakon 7. You just have to beef it up considerably, and it can become quite capable. Power plant, thrusters and what not. Pretty expensive. But that's how it is. The bigger the ship, the bigger the fee. I fly in open play, so I have to have shields, as there are quite a few a holes who like trying hold-ups at starports. Key is to move fast, all pips to shield when aligned with destination, and keep dodging until Frame shift drive kicks in.

Try Thrudds excellent trading tool:

Remember to check the large ship box. This will ensure that it doesn't pick outposts.

In Tenche right now, you should be able to make 5.7mil/hour on 3min runs with luxuries. You could earn the base Asp back in an hour and a half, easily. You're effectively doubling your cargo capacity. I ran an Asp with 104, my T7 is 212 with shields and a docking computer. I just ran the math from Lunney in Tenchey 15min ago myself. So I don't know where you're getting that low number. I could beat that low number by a huge amount doing Gandones <-> Derrim real trade runs.

I actually based earlier numbers on slightly faulty numbers. I got the current numbers for Lunney Station, and I actually timed my T7 run. I clock at 4.5min/run, not 3min. Some people must have shortcuts I don't know, but this was both direct, but not utterly killing myself to do it. And I'm using a docking computer. My math:

7545 - 6141 - 1404
60 / 4.5 = 13.333
1404 * 212 = 297648
297648 * 13 = 3869424

So...3.87mil/hr in a T7 in Tenche right now. Not sure where you're getting your numbers, but these are actual proven numbers from what I'm -actually- doing.

In related news, this means I need 31.78 hours to grind to a T9. (123mil, loaded out sufficiently.)
