I've had success avoiding scans using chaff, never tried heat sinks, are these to put the scans off or to allow silent running?

trick I was taught that if fired upon, if you release a heat sink they will target that and fire giving you a few more seconds

My main strategy for smuggling is to get to about 9km from the opening of the station (if possible as I go pass get docking permission), line myself up to the slot, boost, switch to silent running and FA off. The heatsink is just in case I start to overheat before being close enough to turn off silent running.

My smuggler is a cobra. I line up at 8+ km, go silent at 8 km, docking at 7.5, heatsink if needed, no boost. Only ever been scanned at an outpost that I raced to the pad, he started the scan as I slid onto the pad, and didn't get into the landing bay fast enough. Never been tagged at a regular station.

My Cobra runs no Chaff. Double Heatsink.
