SRV Fuel Use Warning

Postby Roger Wilco Jr » Wed Dec 16, 2015 3:56 pm

You are sill using fuel even when stopped on a planet. I parked and switched to external view to a time lapse video of a starport. I came back about 1.5 hours later and found I was almost out of fuel. If I waited another 15-30 minutes, I would have run out and self-destructed! :o

So if you are in your SRV and have to do something that will take a while, log out (or board your ship).
It's time to give this another go.

Turn off modules lowers fuel consumption as well just like ships.

And this makes total sense. It is running life support, scanners, engines and such. They will use fuel even stopped.

Yeah, but it doesn't seem to matter how fast you are going. If you can drive around for 2 hours, I'd think you could just sit there a lot longer, but you can't. I hadn't messed with modules in the beta, but now I think I'll see about shutting some of them down.
It's time to give this another go.

I should have just looked at the fuel rate use gauge - it was right there!

Anyway, you can save a lot of fuel by turning off modules. If you don't plan on getting shot at, start with the shields, as they don't do anything for hull damage from crashing into things. If you don't plan on data scanning anything, turn off the data scanner. If you don't plan on changing our power settings, turn off the power distributor. If you are out prospecting, you can also save a lot by turning off the sensors, turret, and cargo hatch until you need them. I'm easily getting four hours of drive time or more.
It's time to give this another go.

I’ve read or heard somewhere that fuel consumption also depends on the number of pips you assign to engines.

That's not my experience. That applies to jump booster recharge - it doesn't even let you go faster. Using jump boosters will increase your fuel usage, but only slightly (unless you boost 100%, and then it's only like a 1/3 decrease in drive time). Anyway, it's so easy to find standard refuel materials that going to extremes trying to save fuel is kind of like wasting cargo space for a fuel scoop when trading.
It's time to give this another go.
