What does RNGineers mean?

Postby KRRONOSS » Tue Jul 05, 2016 3:58 am

I know it has something to do with the Horizons/Engineers update but is it just a form of acronym or does it have an alternate meaning?

It is a term of disdain. RNG is the acronym for random number generator. The effects of the engineers are random, and you end up with rather poor results rather often. So, RNG+Engineer: RNGineer.

It's a play on phonetics.

RNG - stands for Random Number Generator.

Because the new engineers in Elite craft modifications to your modules based on a Random Number Generation of stats, people are now referring to the Engineers as RNGineers. The letter N sounds like EN when you say it. (EN)gineers.

Right. I thought that RNG was referring to the acronym but couldn't piece together why they would prefix it to Engineers (cause I don't have Horizons yet) but this makes sense.

Thank you.

A term given to Frontier Underdevelopments most recent "update" to Elite: Tedious, as others have said it's a bit of word play.

I think RNGineers is too respectfull.

I will hereby only refer to them as the "Space cooks".

I always thought it worse then that. The effects are random, but so is the collection of most of the materials. At every step you are totally reliant on the throw of the dice, collecting materials, deciding the effect and deciding any special effects.

It has to be the worst system for this sort of thing! I play RPGs which often have crafting in them. Getting the parts for crafting does mean spending time collecting them or finding them, but the limit of random number generation for most is the number you find in that bush or with that seller. I hate the whole collection process the FDev have gone with the engineers. I actually don't mind the RNG elements of the crafting process, but it should not be used with the collection. Sure the collection should a little time consuming but you should be able to either find or buy the parts. Common ones would be available at most stations (relevant for that sort of part) and the rarest should be only in a few systems and expensive. I truly do not understand why all these parts fall off of ships when I blow them up (and are still somehow useable) but I can't just go to the shop and buy them! Someone had to have made them so why can't I go to them and get them direct!

The system could be even more involved - you want that focus crystal for that laser enhancement, well Mr Bob in Sol will be able to make it for you - you just need to get the commodities for it (either mining or buying from a system that sells them). That way you can have the big engineers who make the upgrades but also have smaller manufacturers who make the components the engineers use. There could be a time component to it - you have to wait after you gave the commodities to the manufacturer to produce the part and then have to go back to them to get it. That idea, to me, makes much more sense then randomly finding stuff by blowing other ships up (which is still an option if you don't want to pay for them, both in credits and time).

It would be truly less upsetting if it worked that way, and you would have less people giving up after a week of searching for chemical processors.... Oh my god... its been TWO weeks now.. I STILL haven't found any DX

Luck of the RNG plays a large part when you are doing collection, but I am getting the suspicion that things might not be as random as they appear at a first glance. Location is certainly a factor, but there seem to be others. The problem is that most of this information is not readily available in game, but only becomes obvious once you start googling. Reading about the 3-2-1 "rule" for planetary materials was an eye opener, and so was looking through the Canonn Monster.

Other information is available in game, and we are not using it. Every time I docked at an engineer's base (or any other station), I saw Galnet and the local news on the right, and ignored it. According to what I saw in the google results, that may have been a massive mistake with the RNGineers. I cannot check because I am too far out, but I am certainly going to look really close at the local news on their bases when I am back in the bubble.

And in yet other aspects, the game is misleading. Polonium (my bane) is available by prospecting on planetary surfaces according to in-game information. And as a mission reward in high-tech systems, according to frontier forum posts.

However, kudos to the A-Team or more especially Loriath because he hit the nail on the head: If you want to avoid burn-out, stop focussing on the RNGineers. Have fun in the game by whatever floats your boat, and if you come across RNGineer stuff, treat it as a bonus.

My add-on to this is: Keep your eyes and your mind open, and try if your bloat floats not only on water, but maybe also on beer. Or on brake fluid.
