Is there a way to go back into glide after you drop into normal flight while landing? I keep dropping from glide way farther from ports than I mean to and have to enjoy a nice 10-15 minute crawl to get to port

Yes, of course.
Fly up beyond mass lock, and re-engage cruise.
The trick to it is to not be in a hurry, and plan a wide arcing approach.
And don't dive for the surface until you can position your approach at around 45 degrees that I consider to be optimal, but 40-55 works fine to.

Ah good to know, im on a not so great pc so when i jump and drop in and out of cruise it takes a good 10 seconds at least so landings arent very fun for me

And remember (or learn) that when you are approaching the planet and have the horizontal pitch lines on the HUD, and you are above the "enter glide" line, you go a lot faster when your pitch is around 0 degrees. So if the place you want to land is far away, then level off and fly around the curve of the planet until you get close, and then do as Tor suggests.

There's an instance merge or "load" that happen between cruise and glide.
This can take a while, and with busy instances (as in other players in the area) take a really long while, or simply stall all together.
It's Elite YMMV.
