Re: 1440p Monitor Selection

I guess my main thinking is that I will generally refresh my gpu(s) 18 months - 2 years whereas monitors are a more of a 5 +years refresh cycle, that in mind will 1440p in 5 years will be where 1080p is now i.e. the minimum standard, and presumably 4k displays will have the hardware gpu wise to make it as easy to run as 1080p is now. Also if my understanding is right Display port 1.3 also brings 120 Hz refresh to the table but I am not sure when that is likely to become widely available in monitors.

I want to be able to see how it runs on my system to know that I could go 4k now then bring the rest of the system up and progressively improve the frame rate.

Arrrghhh its infuriating!!!

Typing on mobile, so excuse shirts formatting.. Samsung made me return much mobile fire starter, so I am stuck on the s7..

So I think we're all mostly saying the same thing. 4k would be nice, but it is unrealistic. I would upgrade my processor but that's even less effective now that Intel has no real competition, and they know it.. 3 year cycle ffs.. so might as well keep my 4770k and keep the 5820k in my server.

I replace my glutathione minimum 3 years. 4 if I can, but Nvidia has trickle updated gpus as bad as Intel and cpus.. so 4 years needs an upgrade gourmet wise.

It seems 1440p is the result so far. But which I wonder.. Asus didn't show any 27" 2560x1440 monitors at cessation, so I don't expect a showing 8n October from them as usual. Seems like what we have is it until q2 2017.

So acer vs Asus, when they are likely the same panel?

Bigger quesrion. Wait for 1070ti, buy titanic, or get a 1080 few when they come back in Stock on wednesday..

I think 1440p will remain a niche, and 1080p monitors will still be around for the next decade, until 4k is the new 1080p, but it will be a decade before that is the case.

But I don't regret getting one, and I expect at least
My monitor linked above has actually replaced fully my three 24" monitors and not just the middle one that I expected.
Sure the horizontal resolution of 3440 helps with that, and my 980ti keeps most games at 60 fps.
G-sync would have been nice but that hardly existed when I bought this in December, at least under twice my budget.

So Tor you are running 4k on a 980 ti and elite and it is plenty playable frame rate wise ?
And do you ever try running at 1440p on it and is it horrible or a viable option if frame rates are dire ?

Apologies for all the questions.

3440 would be the 21:9 qhd and not UHD.
I have read it is more taxing, but playable with a 980ti is heartening.

No I'm not running 4k, 3440×1440 ultra wide format. The 980ti can barely keep that at 60fps in most games. But then again I only play ED and occasionally doom, the latter struggle a little if I max everything but only a little.

Most of the time now I use vr, I also double dipped with both vive and rift.

Yeah. 3440 would be awesome.. but I am not dropping 1300 on a single non-UHD screen. Just not gonna happen .

So doing a quick google and some reading and it seems that running a 4k Panel at 1440p, or 1080p is a thing. Results seem to vary enormously as to how good/bad it looks. Some commentators saying its ok others saying it is horrid.

If nothing else it gives an option if a game is simply too laggy to play at 4k.
reddit on 1080/1440p on 4k screen

That's definitely helping me towards a decision.

Dammit guys.. really? 1440p on 4k is doable and not dog poop? Now I am really rethinking this.. the 4k60 gsync panels are the same price.. blast it..
