If gaming is all you do that is.

Personally I'm waiting for at least next gen to bother, then I will consider building a new rig.
Apart from my current gpu (that had to be updated to run my new screen) my PC is from mid 2014.
Still expect at least another year out of it, and after updating moving it to a more Home theater couch gamer type machine.

I have a 780, the non-ti variant. It's a bit underpowered being a repurposed titan, and is lacking in the VRAM department. Having to turn down the witcher so much and turn on motion blur is really why I need/want to upgrade soon. My monitor has to be replaced anyway, as it is failing. I don't want to replace this with another basic 1080p screen, and I know I can't run a 144Hz screen off this GPU. So I need a new monitor, I might as well get a proper replacement that's at least 1440p and has gsync. So that means I need to upgrade my GPU now instead of waiting. Replacing my monitor is becoming non-optional though. Stupid warranty repair never actually repaired it, and it went out of warranty extended-warranty right after it got back.. Squaretrade never dicked me about like this. I won't be using Asurion via the Walmart Care Plan again.. I know, I know, don't buy electronics from Walmart.. It was really a good deal for this monitor, and it was in stock.

I'd love to just buy a new GPU, a Vive, and be done with it..but I don't think that's a realistic option. If I already had a non-failing main monitor,s ure. But I can't go demo a vive for 2-3 hours to see how it would affect me, especially considering my susceptibility to motion sickness.

Being an adult (sort of) is the only reason I've not gone back to nvidia.com and click "checkout, next day before 10am shipping" on that TXP already.. FFS, I really want to. Logic be damned, I want 4k60 and a giant e-peen boosting GPU to go with. :x

(Well, that and the fact I'm sure the 1080Ti will likely be a near-TXP performer for $800, and I could SLI that for near the same actual price.. )

You are hereby notified that you must post your system specs, and the frame rates for games as follows (in a new thread).
-ED: 4k in station and on planet surface driving around.
-Witcher 3: 4k while fighting in the open and casting igni.
-Any other games you have that you run in 4k.

You must also run ED and W3 and/or other suitably AAA graphically demanding games in 1440 and 1080 and state the following:
-Does it look like dog poo.
-Did your frame rates drop proportionally to the change in pixel count.
-Do you think that 1080 on a 4k monitor looks worse than 1080 on a 1080 monitor.
And if Pr0n looks better in 4k (joking).

I was an inch away from ordering that monitor yesterday. That's why I'm asking kindly if you could feed us some info. :) I can get some opinions of some of that online, but I tend to trust someone here a little more.

Lol ok deal although I don't have witcher at all. I can do comparisons on bf4. The division. Elite obviously. Gta 5.
I have just set ED to 1.5 x super sampling to see how that fairs. So far 30 fps inside stations and 60 out and about. Not tried planetary landings yet. That will be next.
Currently running 6080 x 1080 and everything on max settings.

Don't have the witcher? I can't even, as the kids say. Did you run out and buy the monitor already, or are you in surround on your old setup? Also, remember to get some planet side frame rates if you can.

Psh, post em here. I wanna see too! If scaling isn't dog poo, I'll totally forgo gsync to get a UHD or actual 4K monitor.

Also, I think everything live is both better and worse in 4k.. have you watched the news in FHD? I mean, that's pretty brutal on many reporters, and we're talking 1080p... not even UHD. Too much detail might be to the detriment of pron.

I already had the surround setup. Been running that for a couple of years. If it helps I also have a gtx 780 classified in another machine so can do some comparisons using that as well if you like.
I'll do some planet side tests on current setup with standard then 1.5 super sampling and then 4k once monitor arrives tomorrow.

This is like pushing your friend off a cliff and seeing if he bounces. If he does, you jump too.

Also, I'm not sure I can talk to someone who doesn't have Witcher 3. I didn't play W1 or 2, and was hesitant about W3 after reading about the dodge/roll needed, but I got it. I loved it...possibly in the top 3 games I have ever played, and I'm old. I played Elite in '85 as a teen. I'm saving the 'blood and wine' expansion because I don't want to play it, knowing that's it. No more W3. /derail

Any info you can pass is good, but I'm looking mostly for info on the stuff I posted, even if not in W3. Thanks in advance.

I'm halfway through Blood and Wine now. I've completionist'd The Witcher and The Witcher 2 over the past year+. I wanted to go in fresh to a new complete run of the game. Hundreds of hours later.. and I would have done it all again. The Witcher 3 is easily top 5, and maybe the top of those, fighting hard with Mass Effect. I sort-of regret not diving into the games earlier, but since the series is complete, I can finish it, uninstall it, and move on to a new series. Bioshock The Complete Series looks to be next.

So yeah, any information, relevant or otherwise is appreciated. I'm not one to jump first, but I will jump next..

I wish I could stop this "buy a titan x pascal" urge I've had all friggin' day.. ugh.

Ok so as it stands right now this is system spec and some initial testing on the current screen set up.

Intel core i7 4790 running at 4.6 Ghz on all cores.
16GB Corsair DDR3 2.4ghz
Asus Maxiumus Formula VII
Asus 980ti Poseidon base clock 1114Mhz boost 1202Mhz, Memory GDDR5 6GB 7010Mhz clock speed. (factory clock settings)
Samsung 850 EVO 1TB
3 x Samsung Syncmaster P2450 1080p monitors running bezel corrected resolution of 6080 x 1080.

So with Super sampling set to 1.5 x and V-sync on.
In station 39-46 fps
In space 60fps constant
Planet approach lowest was 54 fps
Glide to planet 48- 50 fps
Close to surface and landing 40 fps

In SRV, I headed out 10km from the station, it was on the dark side of the planet and the number of Lights the SRV had on did affect frame rate slightly by a couple of FPS. It was between 37 and 45 but did go as high as 50 fps.

With Super sampling set to 1 x and V-Sync on it runs 60 fps all the time everywhere.

I will update this post as I do more testing.

My PC decided to freak out when a forced update went bad, causing me to rollback and forget to respond to this.

Firstly: Thanks!
I am sitting with a 1080FTW in my cart right now, and I think the framerate will be enough even with a TXP to do this properly. plus, while my server is X99/2011-v3, my gaming rig is 1150/z87. That means x16 OR 2 times x8.. The 4770k sitting at 3.9Ghz isn't nearly old enough to justify that.. it just isn't Rarely does my CPU bottleneck me in a game that's not some ridiculous title that was never meant to be played with any CPU left, like Ashes or Total Warhammer.

Secondly: See firstly.. That current frame rate will most certainly not cut it for my sim sickness supseptibility in Elite. Gotta go HFR to avoid that.

Really, my biggest concern on the GPU size boils down to buying too early, and getting stuck with a rebranded cutcore titan like I did with the 780, that was hindered by the lat gen specs, 3GB of total VRAM, and a Ti version out of nowhere that should've been the 780 to start with.. So on the GPU side.
Buy a titan X pascal, get a warranty from nvidia that's not as good as EVGAs, but a killer card.. But that card is mostly useless in 3 years, because it was too powerful to do any good, and too weak in the future for what is actually needed.
Buy a single 1080 and hope that it's really as good as it's touted to be.
Wait, stop playing video games, become a monk, and wait/hope for a 1080Ti this quarter, half, or year.
Buy a single 1080, Hope the 1080ti releases in 90 days to get EVGA to step up the GPU.

I know we're off the Monitor purpose of the thread, but a GPU is an important concern of buying a new monitor. I am still in need of and open to suggestions on the monitor front.. I'm totally lost as to if 1440/Gsync is the best best, and if so, IPS or TN?

Anywho, just an FYI.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product

EVGA 1080s are in stock on Newegg, for now.

Can't wait to see the results of that new predator that's coming tomorrow!

For the record on specs:
Intel Core i7 4770k @3.9-4Ghz.
Asus Z87 Pro
EVGA 780 SC ACX
Samsung 850 Pro 512GB
Samsung 840 500GB
Crucial Ballsitix 4x4GB DDR3
Corsair 800w PSU - Forget the model.

My server is much better, but I'd prefer not to gut that.. yet.

I'm trying to keep the three of us and our specs/fps straight...

We each have an ssd and 16gb ram...throw those out.
Our cpus are different, and our gpus are different. I'd have to look up the relative performance for the CPU's, but so little has changed in the last 4-5 yrs, I dunno if it matters for games. It does for stuff like video editing, etc, but not so much for games.

So for the GPU's...I know using SS to get 4k-like isn't the same performance wise as just running 4k, but it gives a good idea.

Pixels:
780 1920x1080 for 2M.
980:6080x1080 for 6.5M. - 1.5SS for 9.8M - 3840x2160 for 8.3M.
1080:5760x1080 for 6.2M - 1.5SS for 9.3M - 2.0SS for 12.4M

So...
780
ED FPS@pix:
60 everywhere @ 2M

980
ED FPS@pix:
? @6.5M
60 space / Low 40's station / High 30-Low 40 planet @ 9.8M
70's space / 60 station / 50-60 planet @ 8.3M

The Division:
30-50 @ 8.3M

1080
ED FPS@pix:
60 everywhere@6.2M.
60space/55station/50-60planet @1.5 SS 9.3M.
60space/33station/33planet @2.0 SS 12.4M.
2.0 SS was playable, but the HUD/station still looked like jagged aliased ass, which is my main beef with ED.

W3 FPS@pix
Mid-50's @6.2M (this was mid-20's when I was running on my 780ti).

I can update this if you guys feed me da infos.
