2nd Screen?

I finally have a graphics card that can run a second monitor / screen etc.
I game on a 55" Sharp TV from the couch (it's also the man cave tv etc) and have an unused 20" Monitor (720 or 1080 dunno) that I would like to use to my side for other purposes ingame or for INARA or something.
so a couple Q's:
Would someone be able to reference where to figure out how to do this?
Can you set second monitor to be your side panels etc? Can it be used for both sides? What ingame function have you used your 2nd monitor for? (If you have etc)
I assume you can use it for outside Elite apps very easily (Correct me if I'm wrong) - but how would it recognize the mouse on that one screen and tell the game to ignore the mouse movements?
Appreciate the feedback and help in advance,
Have a great day!

Second Monitor for me was always for Windows itself.
I used it for Websites, trade tools software, Teamspeak, etc. Then it died. Now I have my ipad between the stick and throttle on my desk and use that for Websites mainly.
I don't think it can be used in game unless you split the game in half and run one side on the TV and the other on the Monitor which wouldn't work very well because of size and position.

I have 3 screens on mine, I only use my center screen for ED.
In windows I have them all setup as an extended desktop.
In ED I set the output to borderless window.
It looks and acts as if it was fullscreen but it doesn't hijack the desktop, inow I can use my mouse/kb to just click on whatever I like on my other two screens, ED never minimizes so when i get back to the game I just click the mouse inside the games window and I have full control of my ship.
Having a second monitor is invaluable, both for browsing or teamspeak as well as for throwing on Netflix or other streaming services when the monotony of a traderoute takes you.

3 screens here all 24" 1080p run elite across all of them so I get full peripheral vision without the need to head track or mouse look.
Screen res is 6080 x 1080..it's superb for combat as you can look about very easily.

Ok so I agree and I'm sure you can all agree that periphial view won't work for me, but having TSpeak and other software would def be handy on the second (smaller) monitor...
So is it just setting Elite to borderless that allows this? or do I need to play with another setting somewhere etc?

Yeah all you need to do is set the screen you want elite to play on as your primary monitor. You don't even need to set it to bordered or windowed mode. Just set that screen to its native resolution. The windowed option just means you won't have to alt + tab to utilise the second screen. You will just move your mouse onto it click then click back inside elite when you want to play again as per what TorTorden said.

But . . .
Clicking to check something on your second display while in HC can be disconcerting.
You know you are only going to be a second, but in that second your ship drops out out HC with an angry sun filling your primary screen. You grab your stick and throttle - but the controls are dead and you suddenly drop into standard flight to save you crashing ignominiously into the sun.
You forgot the computer had focus on the second screen.
It's an easy mistake to make - and make more than once.
Any fool can do it.
I've got the scorch marks to prove it.
