New GPU and PSU Advice

Postby Xebeth » Fri Dec 11, 2015 5:31 pm

The prettiness that is Horizons is too much to ignore and I'm going to have to succumb to a new GPU, and as my PSU could barely power a 60w bulb and new PSU as well.

I'm leaning towards an Asus Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 Strix 4GB (link) and a Corsair Builder Series CXM 750W PSU (link).

Now my PC is very old but does the job so far, and whilst I can throw a few hundred quid at it, I don't want to go down the new PC route at this time, its a Dell with a Core 2 Quad CPU Q9550 2.83GHz (don't laugh at me  )

So two questions for those tech savvy, from this poor computer idiot... :)

1) will this all work, or am I living in a dream world?
2) is there anything I need to think about beyond simply plugging it all in and hoping for the best?

I don't see why it wouldn't work - as long as your motherboard supports PCI-E. ;)

If you already have a 500W power supply (with a supplemental power connector), you may not need a new one. These new cards are very efficient. I have a 750W unit, but with two cards.
It's time to give this another go.

The only concern I would have would be your power supply, Dell usually puts in the smallest power supply to get the job done. Luckily power supplies are not expensive at all if you have to upgrade that as well.

Hi quick question

is it a Dell case?

make sure the 970 will physical fit inside.

I have a 970gtx and its very good I went for a very cheap Zotac.

I don't see a problem (except perhaps your motherboard), the PSU is probably overkill, but having an overhead there certainly doesn't hurt (I have a 700 watt OCZ one that has had a very easy life).

What card do you have now?

Thanks all, I have a Dell case with a teeny tiny PSU (375w), my current card is a 630, I want lots of PSU overhead, so as long as I have the space I think I'm good to go.

So now I am starting to worry that I may have an issue with my GPU. GTX 650. I currently run custom @ 1080 and get 66-80 in normal space, little lower in SC when its crowded. RES i am about 50-60 and 40-45 in stations.

Do I need to do the same and throw $$$ at it as well?

Depending on the PC you are running, if it is capable of SLI you could just buy a second GTX650 and go that route.

Personally I run dual GTX670's with a 3 monitor setup in SLI surround and everything is smooth as can be.

Think I may have to update my card, too. Just bought a 2560x1080 monitor and while it looks great, I also run a second screen (at 1920x1080) and my poor old 660GTX won't run both on the HDMI (I think it maxes out at 2 1920x1080s), it was doing fine with the new one on display port and old on HDMI but has now decided that it won't do anything with the display port. I'll piss about with it a bit more tomorrow, but for now I'll use the iPad as a second screen (yeah, first world problems).
