Revisiting Windows 10

Postby Loriath » Tue Jan 05, 2016 7:17 am

I am contemplating giving Windows 10 another chance since it has had a half year to iron out the kinks that I ran into and we learned to work around MS's deplorable Privacy choices.

My main problem that moved me back to Windows 7 was the issue with my X52 Pro and I am wondering if this issue has been addressed.

I only plug my X52 Pro in when I plan on using it as I have limited desk space. Sometimes, due to unknown reasons, I have to unplug the stick during a play session as my MFD screen goes wonky and I get a stuck button or two. In Windows 7 this is no big deal, but previously in Windows 10 it would Lock my system up and nothing short of a hard power off would recover it.

This was an issue for some and I was wondering if this has been fixed with the latest drivers from Saitek? (Beta or otherwise)

I do use Windows 10 and a Saitek X52 (non-Pro) but I keep it constantly plugged in. However there were cases where I did unplugged it and plugged it in later and it worked fine. But there are still problems. One of those times I got a BSOD! And even when it appears to work, there's a process called saitekMFD or something similar (not at my home PC atm) that starts consuming CPU power right after you unplug it. One workaround is to kill that process, or even better stop it from auto running at every log in as it serves no purpose at least for running E: D.

Overall, if it doesn't give you any BSODs (ok, only did it once after 20 or so times, could have been a coincidence) it will work, but you must disable that process.

I am using the Pro for quite a few months now with Windows 10 and never has issues with it. I upgraded from Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 10 Pro but I doubt it has anything to do with it.

One think I have noticed is that the X52 needs a bit of power so if the MoBo or USB hub does not provide enough then there can be issues.
A USB powered hub can be a solution to the problem. Also USB 3.0 ports seem to be working better than 2.0

Good luck in solving it

I have it on a powered HUB.

This is specifically a driver issue, so I am looking to see if anyone that experienced this can say for sure it has been solved. It seems to be on Reddit that it is solved, and my google searches say some are still experiencing it.

The Win 10 beta drivers have solved the issue with it locking the system. There are still plenty of people having issues of a different nature though.
I'm on Win 10 and there was a major update a week or two ago and after that my X52 just stopped working. I had to go through a procedure of removing everything (including manual registry deletions) for Saitek and reinstalling to get it back.

So, your original problem should not be an issue anymore. Doesn't mean it won't be a faff to get it working now I'm afraid.

Well I am going to risk it, but not today. Maybe later this week or on the weekend depending. Usually takes me about 8-10 hours to do a complete clean install and configure.

The second round of beta Saitek drivers took care of the bug where disconnecting my X-52 Pro caused Win 10 to lock up. I have not had any trouble with Win 10, E-D, or the Saitek drivers to speak of for a long, long time. I am not using a powered USB hub, just a standard USB 3 hub.

make an image of your installation before upgrading or before a clean install.

My first try in Windows 10 upgrade was a disaster as I had the cisco vpn and cisco anyconnect clients installed. No network after that no matter what I tried...

I have a Base image of BareBones Windows7 and drivers. And an image of Current drives. I also have 2 separate backups of all my data.

I have done this so many times that I have created batch files to copy all my stuff and when that is done forces a Macrium Reflect Image and then a verify of all files and integrity checks on the drives. Only then will I consider it safe to do a Windows 10 install. Oh, did I mention all the software I have already downloaded that is all the important apps/utils in their Win10 versions including drivers? Oh Yes, did all that over coffee this morning and have 2 copies of that as well.

as they say, This ain't my First Rodeo! :)

Using Macrium myself for image making :)

But there are no data on my desktop. Everything is on a RAID5+Spare setup on a W2K12 server continuously mirrored over to another RAID5 external box... (Reached 6Tb) Occasionally I mirror the critical data (1Tb) to an external disk to have it mobile.

I know I am crazy :)
