CH Throttle Pro - Modes

Anybody using them?

If I change modes, it doesn't make a difference - all the buttons do the same thing. I was expecting the buttons to do nothing in "unused" modes. Anyway, the standard keybindings don't appear to support modes. But then you have things like Voice Attack, which can get around that. So can you use the CH software to change what the throttle buttons do when they are in different modes with Elite? I haven't messed with modes or their software since I calibrated my throttle. Also, if modes do work, is it done out of game like VA, or does Elite see more keys that can be assigned? That would be a problem since you can't bind the same action, in Elite, to more than one key.

Anyway, I'll look into it if they work. Thanks. :)

I haven't bothered with modes as I find I can cover everything with some to spare using a single button as a shift. I have found that if a button has a single unshifted action mapped to it, it reacts exactly the same way when shifted. As soon as a shifted function is added it's quite happy distinguishing between the two.

I used the CH Control Manager software to set up the thumb joystick as a separate device and ED copes well.

When I first read through the manuals I got the impressions that ED could be managed completely using just the CH software, but decided that it was far easier to use the ED built-in panel.

Even though it is an awful piece of UI design.

I use my gear in direct mode only. And the thumb stick works swimmingly.

Only tweak I did to it was adjust the thumb stick axis sensitivity a little so I get more play in the low end and a lot more fine control for thrusters.
Great for landing for example. I can touch down at a a steady 5-8 ms and make small movements in the srv turret.

As for the modes I believe they only do anything in mapped mode that tend to merge all sticks into one often needed for older games that doesn't support separate devices but since ED does I hAve only barely touched it.

I can also mention I tend to use two of the buttons as shift keys. The third one to the right (as I am using it) is reverse. And for instance I push reverse and the middle button for boost.
Having to press two buttons to boost helps keep my parking accidents down ;)

Hmmm, well once I catch up with DWE I should have plenty of time to read up and experiment. I think I'd like using modes, something like green for normal navigation, red for combat, and yellow for landing or SRV. I'll also look into using shift keys to expand my button selections. I just really prefer buttons over VA for most things.

I have CH Throttle, Stick, & Pedals. I use the CH Control Manager to set up my gear as a single device. I do not use modes at all, but do use a shift button (pinky button on the stick) to overload a few functions. Years ago I had looked into playing with modes, but eventually moved away from them. One thing that always bothered me is that the modes on the throttle and stick are independent of each other. Plus, I don't usually look at the gear enough to actually see the mode lights, so I found them less than useful.

I think that you need to use the Control Manager software to program modes, but I am not 100% sure of that. I think that the trigger button on the stick is always "Button 1" to ED, regardless of what mode the stick is in.

Like Tor, I have the thumb stick set up to use for thrusters and it is terrific for that. It gets a lot of use, both in combat and during landing.

Here is how I have things set up. There are only a couple of things for which I take my hands off the gear (maps, mostly). I also have a few functions on here that I rarely use, like wingman commands and the generic "Toggle FSD".

I really wish my joystick had a pinky button - it would make shifting a lot easier. Now I'll have to use another throttle button. One disconcerting thing I read about modes is that the LED color doesn't always correspond to what "mode" you are in, it just changes color each time you hit the button. I could maybe live with that, but it could be confusing.

Yeah, this is the reason I bought the Pro Throttle. Funny thing, I just recently read an old reddit where Mobius was swearing up and down that using an analog joystick for thrusters was terrible (for combat) and they need to come on full using digital buttons. I'm curious to try this but I'm months away from being back in the bubble. You still need the analog thrusters for landings, but maybe I'll need to sacrifice another hat for digital thrusters - or use modes.

Yup, I still use the mouse for maps - everything else is on the hotas or via VA. Now I need to learn to use the joystick for maps before VR comes along.

How old is that HOTAS? Looks pretty old just at a glance.

I got my first CH sticks & throttle over 25 years ago (iirc). About that time they came out with the Pro Throttle and Combat and Fighter Sticks. The only changes since then have been switching from gameport to USB and add modes (afaik). I don't know what I did with my old ones when I stopped playing games, but CH would have upgraded them for free and I'm sure they would still be going strong.

Do CH sticks have the twist axis for rudder?

Sadly, no.
