Increased Temperatures Since 2.1?

Postby Roger Wilco Jr » Wed Jun 01, 2016 11:30 pm

My graphics cards have gotten a bit warmer since 2.1 dropped. One was getting into the mid to high 70s. So I finally installed the 4th case fan I bought about a year ago. After futzing with the location and orientation, both cards, worst case (sitting in a hangar), are in the low 60's. So that's cool, and it's also great not having the temperature differential between the cards as before. :)

Anyway, I just thought I'd mention it. If you have having any issues they may be temperature related.
It's time to give this another go.

Increased utilization thanx to more OpenGL v3 features and optimizations

I've been measuring utilization, and yep, it's up. They are taking more advantage of the units with more OpenGL v3 features and optimizations (switched to GL v3 with 2.x, hence why MacOS X couldn't make it), which is a good thing.

I have my Mini-ITX case next to (within 0.5m of) the window A/C now (I put one in for my 7 system x 8 core 35W opteron OpenStack cluster in 2014). Now the hot air just rushes from the back (GPU left side, CPU right side) and top (PSU fan out) into the cooler space at the A/C unit, while the ambient is roughly 20C (68F) right at the unit itself, which gets pulled into the sides (GPU left side, CPU right side).

I love not needing any fans in my case, although there is a 120mm in the front to blow over the hard drives. But even when the A/C was off, case ambient was only 40C (104F). I love having Mini-ITX where the GPU and GPU fans themselves are right at the sides, so the heat exchange is perfect with the cooler temperature.

I always turn the A/C off when my system is not running. I don't want to have to worry about condensation, however remote.

Nice to hear that's confirmed and it wasn't just my imagination.

I've spent my adult life designing products, with maybe three exceptions, to not use fans. The boss just hates fans. And here I sit with a PC using 10 fans! I don't think I've ever had a system with more than three, maybe four, fans before. Now I'm really getting interested in finding a MB/case combination that is actually designed to remove the heat from the case and not just blow it onto other parts.

I went MicroATX in the '00s, and Mini-ITX in the '10s. Never looked back. The less air, the less you have to move, and the closer your components can be to the outside. While I keep eyeing a MicroATX SLI configuration, it's just too much heat "trapped" at that "inner board."
