How do you do surface scans without a scanner?

i think maybe it's a bug.

find a system that has been discovered but not explored, i.e. you can see all the planets etc. in your radar but each body says 'unexplored' in your hud. select one and close the distance until you see 'scanning' in the lower left of the hud; when it finishes it will name the body and its type - and you'll get an entry in your data that you can get some cash for when you dock next at a station 20Ly or more away

tldr - it works like you were using a DSS but you don't get the blue message in the upper right

...still haven't found a conflict zone that isn't broken. so much for improving my combat rank.

clivewil wrote:ok i found a Conflict Zone in Codorain, of all places - but there's no conflict, just a huge mass of ships doing circuits - and i can't select a faction to join either.

is this a bug or an 'undocumented feature' that i am unaware of?

i also found out i could do basic surface scans without a scanner. odd.

I've been hoping Codorain would break out of its lonely shell in that part of space since it was one of the only Empire systems all around that area, but alas I think the conflict zone that isn't really operational yet is the simulation not working properly or a placeholder for one to perhaps start soon (so I'll keep and eye on it as I want more Empire over there!).

FD have recognised it's a bug and are looking into it. that's no solution for me though, as they could be months sorting it out - looks like it's back to the RES and ranking up the slow way.

Oh, that scan! No, it's always been that way. When you use a basic discovery scanner, it finds the bodies in the system, but they appear as unknown (or is it unexplored) in your scanner and navigation panel. The scan you're talking about is what we could call a basic scan and it's done with the Sensor Suite you use for everything. It's not the scan you get with the Detailed Surface Scanner.

Yes, you should still be paid for that sort of scan. As Flip said, you could kind of call is a Basic Surface Scan.
The Detailed Surface Scanner is a passive module, so you can think of it as augmenting the scanner that is already built into the ship, giving extra definition to the scan.

You still have to fly close to the "Unknowns" so they can be scanned by the basic scanner......

When you get close enough you will see "Scanning" come up in the target display

They will then become known....

Don't bother with asteroid fields.....You get jack shit for them....

I'm based at Codorain at the moment, the Empire outpost in the "north".

Took the short trip to Bhaguti to check out the RES mentioned here. Several anocondas and pythons dropped in over the hour and a half i was the and it was a pretty productive (destructive?!) time. The only downside being the nearest outpost being 900ls away. Still, reckon i'll head back some time, maybe see some of you there?

Going back to Codorain it seems like a prime area for future disruption, especially with Arque an alliance system out on its own and fed close by too...
