Where´s the adventure?

To me, half the fun (like mentioned above) is building my own story.

Sat down with a pen and paper once i learned the ins and outs of Elite lore and wrote my characters backstory.
This in turn gave my character (me) motivations behind his actions. When something unexpected happens, it just enrichens the story i'm telling in my head.
I've never been the creative type. I don't draw, i can't write very well. But even still I derive enjoyment from telling my own story, and i guess in some sense, Elite gives me the proverbial "crutches" i need to achieve this.
My CMDR is his own person in a sense and I like trying to look at the world with a new set of eyes and believes that are not my own (Let's be honest, If Elite was real, i would not have aligned with a faction that condone slavery of any kind, even Imperial slaves).

Aside from that, i just really REALLY enjoy flying my imaginary space ship

Or maybe i'm just insane... Probably the latter...

The whole point of me clearing a save after getting into the 100's of millions of credits was to do just that, write my characters story and see it through the game. I love the writing part of it, and though I am no Hemingway, I am improving. The adventures in my head when I am flying are much better than just slogging through the game alone.

In fact in my head, I do have Morgan Freeman narrating as I play. So glad my brain chose him and not PeeWee Herman.

I think it's worth bearing in mind that the game isn't finished yet. FD had to release something to get the money coming in. We're a lot better off than Star Citizen backers who have put $84m into the product and there's still no commercial release after three years. At least we now have Xbox kiddies helping to subsidise development.

I find it best to think of ED as less of a game and more of a simulated environment (I do realise it lacks several features of a true simulation), and as such you are existing in something that it much much bigger than you are, once you think this way you appreciate that in reality you are never really going to make any significant difference. Now this can be difficult for many people, it's true that we have been brought up as being the hero in our games, the key player in an evolving story, ED isn't like this, you are just another Joe Schmo trying to grind out a living in an uncaring galaxy.

ED holds up quite a good mirror to life in this way, we may turn the tide of one battle, but as individuals we'll never win the war, it will always be about the numbers, and because it's about the numbers, that is all we will ever be, a number in someone else's plan.

Once you accept this, you realise it's about finding your own small individual victories, and these victories vary from person to person, for some it'll be wealth, for others ships, or flipping control in one system, or finding that forest moon, but whatever it is, it has to be because you have set it.

Now I fully expect that FD will add more complex missions with greater variety over time, but we are never going to be heroes except in our own minds.

Good points from all. ED is most definitely not holding ones hand and suggesting what to do. It´s simply a universe where one makes ones own path. As someone mentioned I think what I´m hoping for is a bit deeper missions with more "personal" effects, even if that is only shown in some end-of-mission texts. I´m not really looking to be the greatest hero of the universe. What I would like to see more of is that I actually interact with others on a low, personal level. Today you really only see some numbers changing.

One thing that I hope will come is passenger carrying. Being able to bring people aboard opens a wealth of possible missions and new types of signal source events.

Passengers should definitely be coming in the game, it and missions for passangers was included in the earlier games, and this is pretty much why the Orca exist (it's a luxury cruise liner after all, and pretty useless for anything else)

To be honest I've not thought about the lack of story etc. I just started to play as I did back when I was a kid playing frontier. I enjoy the freedom and the ability to find your own path. It has been a bit of a grind sometimes to build up the credits to be able to do what I want. However now I've got my Asp I'm really enjoying playing at been an armed trader/pirate masher! I love the fact people have been inspired to produce things like Huton Orbital radio and the such like and I'm really looking forward to seeing the game grow. To me Elite is evolving into something I could only dream of back in the halcyon days of Frontier!
