I never used any of the trade tools, preferring to make my own charts like I did back in the good old days. I started a commodities list using a text file back when Alpha4 started, and I've just been adding new items each time FD throws in new products to buy/sell.

When I enter a new area of systems, I land at each one and take screenshots, print out a new set of pages, jot down the market prices real quick and start looking for profitable opportunities. It's probably only good for a day or two before they become unreliable, but I made over 10 million credits doing this. Here's a sample of a page I made last month. The red numbers are items sold at that station; green are their buying prices.

Thanks Globus. Unfortunately it's prone to typos, so when I do find a promising commodity, I have to go back and check my screenshots to verify prices and quantities available. Better profits could probably be made using the galactic map and making long range jumps. I'm hoping that when the finished game is released I'll only have to make one or two sheets like this, then become rich enough to invest in exploration equipment, and start making all my money without having to trading again for the rest of the game. :)

I just buy low or none demand with high supply and hope it will be wanted more where I am going and if that turns out to be the case I repeat the same run using that trade several times.

It's totally not optimum but hey at the moment I know there will be a wipe anyway so I am in it mainly for the flying training at the moment.

As far as banning 3rd party tools go well perhaps frontier are thinking of releasing a paid for app to help and they want not the free competition.

Frontier already announced a free app. First for IPhone and IPad, then Android. It's in one of the nnewslettrs.

Thanks for the info. Free apps can make then a lot from adverts and/or paid for in app extras... So banning the competition will make them more.

I read from the archives what their plan for the Galaxy map was, and if they stick to it (and do it in time), I agree that pretty much all these 3rd party apps become unnecessary. Maybe we're just seeing a small subset of what they already have running.

Also, it appears that what they actually banned was not the 3rd party websites that display the data, but the method of extracting that data by injecting a breakpoint into the executable and hacking into its memory space to copy the data as it's downloaded when you load the market. Banning that method makes good sense to me because hacking into a program that way can easily have side effects, and maybe they're getting many crash reports that are related to that.

h'mm yes banning hacking well that is wise.

So what we are saying really is they did not ban all trading tools just the hacking element.
