Nvidia GTX 960 - Yea or Nay?

Postby Sidenti Taalo » Sat Nov 28, 2015 3:45 pm

It's the most wonderful time of the year - computer upgrade time! The GTX 960 appears to bench very well, especially from a value standpoint. I'm thinking of giving it a go in the new rig. Anyone had any experience with the card? Probably going to go Asus, definitely going 4GB.

Is there a lot of price difference between the 960 and 970? Passmark scores the 970 at 8758 and the 960 at 5975.

I can't trust the prices here in Switzerland to be any indication.

I glanced at prices earlier, the 970's seemed to be somewhere around 40% dearer.

Once I get to a certain point in the benchmark, I start putting more weight on the value per G3D mark - I don't do streaming video or even run much else while gaming, so past a certain point it's more about bang for the buck. The 970's a great bench and a solid value, but the 960 appears to be value king at the moment. 5970 will be a massive improvement over my HD 7750's 1645.

I have the 960 but if you can afford the 970 no question about which is the better card.

And I don't think the price difference now on the older 970 4gb cards (which are still just as great) shouldn't be that much more than the newer 4gb version of the 960.

I have the 2gb 960 and runs ed and most other games quite well not totally maxed out but very close to it in most games.
But its really meant to be a card for 1080p@60hz going beyond that in either resolution or frequency its going to fall behind it does surprisingly well in ED for me and I can double my res using the upscaler fine (just need to lower a few settings nothing major) and still get 45fps in stations., the rest even belts 60fps np.
Extra ram would help but just throwing ram at a card that's not really built for the task isn't going to magically solve the problem so I believe the 960 4gb while a bit better than the 2gb its more marketing than actual value.

That said I'm just now waiting for a new 3440x1440 screen, think I'm going to be OK with the 960 but I quite possible will be looking at upgrading again when next generation hit.

Nah, I'm right at 1080p@60 on a 32-inch TV. 45 in stations would be just fine. Any glitching issues or anything else to note?

Smooth as butter when I stick with 1080p and unless i run downscaling and render at higher resolution I get 60 in station np.
Don't think I have maxed all settings but that's moslty to do with antialiasin (which ED sucks at and looks horrible anyways) and motion blur related.

I can check next time I login.

Evening!
If you're ever going to go VR the recommended specs for Oculus are the 970. I have one and it's lovely, so I highly recommend it if you can get one for a good price.

I'm going to wait for the VR experience until it's in contact lens form.
