Imho the game is more about having fun than being bored making money. If you enjoy your Cobra, keep it and kit it !

Day 11 - Home base Cleve Hub - Eravate System
Usual program : some trading/hauling missions with the Hauler. Found a High Tech station not far away that I was missing in my trading runs. Good news ! It is in a white dwarf system though and I got nearly burned first time in. I was glad I had invested in a heat sink launcher !

Bounty hunting with the Eagle at Nav Beacon : less profitable as the Feds were out in strength and got most of the juicy kills. But fun ! The beam lasers are doing a good job...

No sign of human pilots tonight.

I'm around Gebel, making some reasonable short-hop trade runs nearby. Also visiting a RES for fun NPC bounty hunting. Came across my first few PC CMDRs last night. Two didn't respond to comms hails, and the third entered the station at 150kts just as I was leaving which was close.

Ranked up in explorer after my latest wander out to the Coalsack nebula (despite me referring to it constantly as the Nutsack nebula) and checking out of the large Carinae stars. Now back in occupied space where I'm gaining a few creds to either kit out my Asp to my liking, or to buy a new stripped down one for exploring, while trying to gain some rep with the Feds.

Not much more kitting I can do to it really since it's all A grade kit already... unless I try heavy weapons, but then I'd never be able to hit smaller ships.

Ooh! Got my first ever Python kill today at the Nav Beacon in Allowair. Then I left, as an Elite 'Conda and a Dropship were duking it out and shooting at anything that got too close.

Mainly pew-pew-ing in my Cobra, bounty hunting and the odd combat mission. recently sold the type 6 and got an Asp. Nice ship but can't afford to pimp it to its potential yet so it's used solely for trade when I really really have to have credits.

Reached Baron with Imperial navy and friendly with the Empire. Presently Novice / Merchant / mostly Aimless. So plenty of life left in the old game yet.

So I made the jump and got a Viper to try my hand at some combat. I loaded it out with some pretty good equipment and went to a nearby NAV point, to wait for some wanted ships. Sit there for a couple seconds and a novice cobra comes in, made short order of it and got a nice bounty for it. Decided to try again, and in came a ship with WANTED status so I went after it. By the time I got to it the system authorities were attacking, I figured I would get in on it. BAD IDEA, I start attacking and it turns out I should have looked closer. It was an expert, deadly python.... too late, it targeted me and would not let up. Managed to work it down to 20% before I lost control of my ship. I was not destroyed but stuck in a nose up loop and could not stop it, all systems were down. I ended up having to self destruct. Did I do this right or is there a way to recover from something like that without self destruct? Remember, I am new to this game so please keep the bashing to a minimum

Never seen that but it wouldn't surprise me if your thrusters were wrecked. You might try Field Maint Units, but I have no idea how useful they are.
