Anyone using throttle controller for thrusters or triggers?

Postby Roger Wilco Jr » Tue Mar 10, 2015 5:10 pm

I was so excited to start playing that I never really got my HOTAS properly set up. I wanted to use Voice Attack too, and made a list of verbal commands, but never got that set up either. I'm still using the keyboard for a lot of stuff. Anyway, I'm using the POV hat on the stick for thrusters. This works great for making adjustments when entering the slot and for takeoffs and landings. And I haven't really needed thrusters in combat, so no worries there. But now with tougher opponents, I'm finding this arrangement totally unsuitable as I can't actuate my second trigger and operate thrusters at the same time - at least not very easily. I was thinking that the natural thing to do would be to move the thrusters to the throttle controller. It seems that they would naturally go together. But then it is also very natural to have the thrusters on the stick's POV hat. So if I did that, I'd have to move the secondary trigger, and maybe the primary trigger as well, to the throttle controller. I just wish my stick had a second button I could reach with my trigger finger - problem solved (Saitek ST290 Pro).

Anyone have similar issues and what was your solution and how has it worked out for you? I'll probably experiment with some configurations and see how it goes.

The day wings is released is probably not the best time to start reconfiguring my controllers, but it must be done if I want to be effective in combat.
It's time to give this another go.

I have the up/down/left/right thrusters on one of the POV of my X55's throttle. I didn't bind the forward/backward thrusters as I use the throttle instead, with one of the push buttons behind the throttle for reverse.

How do you find the X55, thinking of treating myself but keep going back and forth between usefulness and cost?

I like it! It's clearly not the best built HOTAS out there (it's made of plastic), but it works fine and has lots of buttons, pots and POV's. You can't ask for more at that price!

Now about its usefulness... well, once you'll have tried a HOTAS, this is a question you'll never ask anymore. :) Combined with the TrackIR, that's the most immersive setup you can have that doesn't involve a Rift or other VR display.

While having the X52 I had lateral/vertical thrusters set to a hat switch on the back of the throttle, easily accessible with my index finger. And like Flip I used the throttle for reverse as well, one of the small thumb buttons on the side doing the toggling.

Scooping fuel is very much like making love to a beautiful woman. First check the target is hot enough,
then approach slowly. Once close enough, pull out your scoop and fill her up. After you're done just
gently pull away, turn around and leave.

Great, thanks. I have the 'Thrustmaster' HOTAS, and I could never go back to not using a HOTAS.

I started with the Speedlink Black Widow HOTAS, then got the Thrustmaster, my only concern now is if I buy a third joystick in as many months my wife may well use the pointy bit to do something unpleasant to me

Thanks, guys. I think I'll keep my triggers as triggers and move the thrusters to the throttle. I forgot that I didn't have a throttle when I first started, so that wasn't an option. I imagine I'll get used to it pretty quickly.
It's time to give this another go.

If you ever get a X55, do yourself a huge favor and get a powered USB hub to run it through - a cheap one will do. They can have horrible ghosting issues otherwise (mine did, some people are fine). Ran it through the hub and it went away instantly.

Mine never had this problem. It depends on your Mobo and the tension it powers the USB ports with.
