BH in RES will gain you rep, but to rank up I believe you have to do Imperial Navy missions from the bulletin board.

Yup. Killing will get your local rep up to a point where you'll get a navy mission available.

back on topic - i just started a 30ish jump journey to a nebula 1000Ly away. Gonna stick with max jump range at least till i'm out of the "bubble"

BH in RES will gain you rep, but to rank up I believe you have to do Imperial Navy missions from the bulletin board.

You get some rep from BH (and trading) but at a much lower rate than running missions, also your rep from BH mainly goes to the major faction and the controlling minor faction, with a small amount spread amongst the other factions. To a degree there is some correlation with the amount of pay out you get, you'll notice most comes from the major faction, then the controlling faction, etc...

The best (quickest) way to rank up in my experience is to pick a minor faction allied, in this case, to the Empire. Run missions for that faction, and that faction only. If there are no missions for your chosen minor faction, don't take any for the other faction's missions. Remember they are in completion with each other, if you can't get a mission go do something else.

When bounty hunting don't attack any ships from your chosen minor faction, no matter how tempting the bounty is.

After you have run enough missions the RNG will start to kick in, remember however that it is still RNG, so it may happen immediately, or it may take some time, just keep running missions.
