I'm grinding on a rare trade route in my Cobra. Its a bit mindless but its going to get me my Asp. Plus it does help hone my flying skills. So far I have climbed the food chain to the dizzy heights of 'merchant'.

However, the money I've earned from selling 7 pages of data was just teribad! I've spent 10-12h of exploring and I got 2mil Cr! I reeeeeally hope FD fixes exploration because at this point, i really never see myself going out again like this apart from specific runs to specific places where I know what I'll be getting (like seeing a black hole or a sun "eat" a close by planet...).

Money-wise, it's a complete waste of time.

But hey, i'll be shooting pirates and hugging my Python for the weekend \o/

I don't think exploration should be made more profitable.

In real life some things are usually very profitable: Trading.

In real life exploration has usually been done either to find some mythical treasure or later it is done in order to gain knowledge. Most often the treasure hunting exploration missions turned out as failures. The exploration for knowledge, like the recent New Horizons mission to get better data on Pluto, has been successful in that we got the knowledge we wanted, but I doubt anyone turned a profit on that mission.

In real life combat is done to protect something valuable like a trade route, but the combat is not in itself profitable. So I think E:D is actually too profitable for people who like pewpew. I guess in E:D you enter a conflict zone as a mercenary and you earn some money from killing off people from the other side. And there seem to be an awful lot of people(npc's) with bounties that nobody has caught yet and they magically pop up right in front of me so I can get them and claim the bounty.

If E:D wants to have a realistic economy trading should be profitable and most other activities should be for other goals than financial compensation.

This is also why I don't see my trading as a grind, it is daily life. Sometimes you have the time or take the time to do other activities, but please don't expect them to be very profitable, you are doing them for other purposes.

This view helps me enjoy the game a lot.

I both disagree and agree.

Bounties, yes thats getting a bit silly, and honestly I have been more and more thinking RES's should just be removed from the game completely.
The belts are still there for miners, but atm they simply serve as wanted NPC spawning grounds and that kills immersion for me.

Bounty hunting should be moved into the bulletin board (which needs a complete rework anyways) and missions like:
"We need you to get this pack of pirates, twelve of them fly under the same flag, but no one has seen more than two at the time".
You could even add follow up missions with some escalating difficulty maybe culminating in assualt the hidden outpost etc.

Exploration however really do need a boost, and it is vastly different from when we launch space probes now, remeber we have warp drives in this game so space exploration is just a more akin to prospecting (which is why not being paid for asteroid belts boggles my mind)
Say for instance if you today discovered and claimed a giant gold deposit with a huge untapped crude oil well right next to it you would expect to get paid right ?
In fact you would probably get so much money you would become stupidly rich.

And a planet like an eartlike. What is the value you could put on a planet like earth? Remember we could actually go there in this game.

Rule 1: Pillage. Then burn.
Rule 2: No such thing as overkill, as long as there are reloads.

i see your logic but this is a game in the end. i don't want to come online to have another job :D

it's supposed to be fun, and i'm sure there are tons of people enjoying just chasing the stars as much as i enjoy shooting pirates down :)

i'm sure they'll think of something to make exploring more interesting. money-aside, it's insanely repetitive. jump - scan - scan - jump - > repeat infinitely. but someone mentioned progressive missions... that actually sounds awesome.

something like EVE has. you start in a system and clear out the pirates, then continue deeper into the space pocket to find their outpost and the "boss" who you need to kill.

Then make group missions with better rewards but more skilled pilot NPCs. Maybe even throw in ship modules as rewards? For example, killing a boss enables you to dock at his station and take some of their weapons/modules... maybe even something simple like ship skins or paintjobs...

Well we do have the Thargoids, as a fact, hiding somewhere. Would be perfect and awe-inspiring to let explorers find small bits and pieces of puzzle parts scattered out in the outer rims, may it be artefacts with (taken only for themselves meaningless) sound parts, puzzle-type shapes, or just remnants of Thargoid bombardment, ruins, REALLY interesting burned-out space debris, or civilization memories pointing to ... their hiding place maybe ... maybe some Second Foundation thing ...

Technically, that shouldn't even be much work, in terms of gameplay it could blow our minds right away. Remember the discussion about the "Unknown Arte/ifact"? That points clearly into the right direction; and it has shown how much competence and potential the ED player base has in terms of real life skills. And dedication.

Ladies, Gentlemen, and Kharma :D, I would like to introduce you to the deep space exploration vessel 'The Lady Phoebe'

Image

Currently 630ly into a journey to the top of the disc, found lots of undiscovered stuff, but nothing of any great interest yet, will keep you posted (either that or I'll get board again and head back).

Totally.....Totally......Totally...........Totally......Agree with that......

Something like that would be great......

And make it abstract and really hard to solve........

Like something that is gonna take a while.....Drip feed it.......No connections......Till someone makes one.......

That would be "Party on.....Excellent"

Oh if only......
