That's my name on here, and in Elite, and it is a total coincidence that it is very close to the name of the group. This has been my "I can't find any cool names that aren't taken, let's use that nonsense one!" handle for years on a number of different services.

Currently living in Chicago, and I've been playing Elite for about a month or two at most now. Just upgraded from an Asp to a Python, and loving it.

I've actually never played any of the prior Elite games, never even heard of them before this, in fact. I think that's my loss. I did however play a lot of Wing Commander 1, 2, Armada, and Privateer, when I was younger. When people ask me about the game I'm playing right now, I tend to explain it as "It's like Wing Commander Privateer with out all the alien cat-people.", and I mean that as praise for both.

My brother actually talked me into getting E:D, though I'd already been considering it, and then it went on sale on Steam, so it all worked out. Sadly, he's on Xbox One, and I'm on PC, and so far it seems like there won't be cross-play. Since we're both busy professionals, and he has two young kids, it might be tough to find an alignment of schedules to form a wing, but I still wish we could try.

One last thing, I just started playing in Mobius today, and I did not see one single CMDR out there. I even headed to Azrael, as the commodities trading dried up where I was hanging around before (Kelin Samba). Is that normal? Is it just that most players are British and they were all asleep by the time I got to Azrael? I've been playing solo, because being trolled by teenagers who like ruining people's day for "lulz" isn't my idea of fun, but it would be cool to see some life in the game.

(Reading through Steam and E:D official forums with people posting asking for changes to the game to force people into being their piracy victims and have some sort of long conversation rather than run or gun just leaves me wondering how anyone with a single digit IQ can operate a computer... they suggest such things like someone should be offering the person who randomly walks up to them on the sidewalk and begins rapidly stabbing them with a combat knife a cup of tea with a smile. And they wonder why so many stay in solo.)

Looking forward to seeing some friendly ships out there, and hopefully not sideswiping any while blasting through the mail slot loaded down with contraband!

Welcome to the group and the forum, Commander!

Feel free to add your name to the In game friend list thread and check our TeamSpeak servers. It will make it easier to meet other commanders. Also, make sure to check the Policy page if you haven't already.

Fly safe! :)

Welcome.

Thing is.
Space is big.
Reallly big.
Mindblowingly freaking huge.

But then again we wouldn't be here if we wherent a bit nuts about space to begin with.
And there is probably no more than a hundred or so logged into mobius at anyone time.
E:D as it is has no wide area group chat, just a local (which only applies to ships you see in your instance)
And direct, which means you have to be on your friends list already.

So best place to find other space nutters are the mobius teamspeak server.

Welcome Schmobius! Love the name, love the attitude. Just remember the cardinal rule of Forum : Dangerous and everything will be fine: Never ever reply without at least 4 stiff shots of whatever, or a pound of onionhead. Whichever you prefer. :)

It's a good thing I have a whiskey distillery within walking distance then, isn't it? :D

Yeah, I get the space is huge part, but when you keep hearing about 11,000 members, and other posts saying there's usually players numbering in the teens buzzing around Azrael, you expect to see one or two flying by. Maybe the posts saying that were old, I don't recall the dates.

Also, if I may ask some noob questions.... is the teamspeak server just kind of an open cocktail lounge of chatting? Since it seems to be no different in function than Google Hangouts or Skype (except no video), I'm assuming it pays no mind to who is close to you or not, and therefore you might be talking with someone on the other end of the galaxy about their favorite single malt, rather than checking in with people on your scanner about forming up a wing to take out some bounties. Which is fine, I guess I'm just wanting to calibrate my expectations there. I saw some mention on their page about a game overlay... wondering if A: that works with E:D well, and B: if that can be used to get into more local/situational chat, or if that doesn't even exist?

The TS has many many channels (or chat rooms) but yea its mostly just a varied group of ED players from across the known universe talking about everything from favorite beverages and weapon loadouts to micro/macro economics, the very essence of being human and generally solving the worlds problems.

The conversation goes where you take it, its definitely more fun to part of it rather than listening to a couple of guys live (and not so live) streaming.
And while it might start in an open style room many will find like minded spirits who wing up and either bountyhunt, trade some will hop into a seperate channel but often we have had multiple wings up while otherwise discussing whatever we are.

I have been on the TS almost daily for the past few weeks and it has always been a lighthearted conversation with genuinely interesting people happy to offer advice and NSFW commentary on an equal footing.

Its also technically usefull since ED'S chat and instancing is both a little buggy at times so a third party communication channel comes in very handy at those times.
In fact I have yet to come upon a multiplayer game that didn't benefit greatly from using one.

Its all very casual and a fairly mature setting.
If I would guess the median age would probably mid 30's.

Glad to hear I'd at least fit the median age.... I don't think I'd be stopping by if I were expecting to be outnumbered by teenagers. (I don't have time to tell them all to get off my non-existent lawn while I'm smuggling.)

I think all of this is great, but at some level, it would be nice if in-game voice worked, as there would be something cool about getting a hail from another ship passing by through the big empty. Definitely a lot less conversation that way though. So yeah, that may be Frontier's fault for not making a better voice channel, but if they had to skimp on something, I'm fine with that being it.

I'll see about trying teamspeak in the next few days though.

No rush and certainly not a requirement.

I just myself think its a great and fun tool to use and for the time being the easiest and fastest way to meet and make friends in Mobius.

Welcome, welcome, Commander. :)

Yeah... even in Mobius, space can still seem big and lonely. In my estimation your best bet is to find folks around CG areas.
