Luckily I'd jumped into a system with a scoopable star and was ready to rock 30sec later.
Still - it's time to call it a night if I'm too tired to pay attention to a fuel gauge....

Of course they would! They saved a few explorers near the core, and one had a broken fuel scoop. They not only met him and saved him, but escorted him in a relay as they ran out of fuel limpets all the way back to the bubble. See http://fuelrats.com/2015/07/24/operation-neospike/

Find a Fuel rat and drop some palladium for them to pay for Fuel Limpets.
