Well for £50 if I got an amp I'd have to then get all the speakers. I've got little speakers on my LG 5.1 although they're loud enough but they wouldn't match to that type of amp. My two Wharfedales would (I suspect, 8 Onm) but that would leave me having to get two more speakers and a sub woofer so the cost would rise. There is another way i can picture, however, with a bit of tweaking and individual level controls (pain with surround though) but I'm not sure how my girlfriend would react to guitar amps on the walls.

You'd think she'd be pleased whatever I did. I mean, how many people can say their partner has a spaceship. Some people are never happy

You wouldn't necessarily have to buy new speakers. But granted, when you start improving any given system, the weakest link becomes more obvious.

Edit: Rule of thumb in HiFi last time I looked was that you can never have an amp large enough. The larger the amp, the easier it can control the speaker, making the sound that much better, or exposing the speakers limits in the process. It's usually an underpowered stressed amp that wrecks speakers.

I agree that if there was a "magic box" that could transform hdmi digital surround source signal (5, 6, 7 or more channels) to spdif digital surround out with the same amount of channels, that would be awesome. I just haven't found it myself.

You know what? I think you should buy one. Just do it. And let me know.... No, I kid you. Don't waste your money... Argh.. I'm not doing much good here am I?... :)

I hear you loud and clear Globus.

Yeah the amp thing, always been my yardstick too. Aim for higher wattage for better performance at lower levels. A bit like an engine in a way. I've got a 125cc scooter and it tops at 70 mph (it has to be restricted to make it learner legal). This ios all well and good seeing as around town it's a 30 limit (if you're lucky, my town's gone down to 20), then 40, 50, 60 and 70 on dual carriageways. This is fine. But if I was to travel by motorway every day I don't see it staying out of the workshop for much of the time compared to something like a Ducatti.

So if I want something for a small room I want to wind the amp up a lot higher than I need to see at what level it distorts and that gives me a good guage on how it will perform at comfortable volumes.

And I can buzz around on my scooter safe in the knowledge that the chrome is still shiny.

I'm still waiting for an e-mail from the seller to see if what we discussed about uncompressed or compressed 5.1 is an obstacle.

Hmmm I think I'm probably at that bit of info here bit of doubt there crossroad you were at when you made that thread on the Elite forum.

Update of my query:

My e-mail to the seller:

Does this device carry uncompressed 5.1 over SPDIF? If it is compressed does it match the intended 5.1 positioning and how good is the compressed quality or what format/ codec is it compressed to?

Thanks again)

The reply:

Thank you for your email and interest in our products.

This device is designed for this purpose and it will extract the 5.1 to SPDIF.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you do need any further assistance.
Yours Sincerely,

(name deleted as I don't know the law)

Well, there we go then. I think I'll give it a try and if it doesn't work I can send it back as the e-mail states on reply to my query:

"This device is designed for this purpose and it will extract the 5.1 to SPDIF."

It truly does sound that way. Very interesting. I really hope the magic box delivers on it's promise.

I will be eagerly awaiting your update. :)

Hi Globus Diablo (named from the circus performing thingy or something far darker?) or anyone else interested in this matter.

Going to go for the one I got the e-mail reply from. I've got copies of the conversations so if it doesn't work as described I've got back up. Not that I've had problems before returning faulty items but it's best to err on the side of caution with these matters.

It's worth a try on that basis. Probably order it on Saturday, funds allowing, then have to wait for it to arrive. If it does solve the uncompressed 5.1 over HDMI to SPDIF issue then it really just comes down to the sound quality. I will keep you posted anyway
