Ordered it.

Delivered Wednesday/Thursday

Good enough e-mail conversations with the seller to return it if it doesn't work as the 5.1 uncompressed audio over HDMI to SPDIF audio 5.1 were discussed specifically as a selling point.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HDelity-HDMI- ... 1594798326?

Hopefully it will be good news. I'll let anyone interested know.

This is not an advertisement by the way. There are other similar products but this is the only one where the seller communicated the details to my satisfaction so I could make an informed decision before committing to a purchase.

It does look like a decent piece of kit.

Kept this thread alive in case there's someone 'over there' with the same concern. See bottom of page:

So, bought an Onkyo for 45 pounds. Hdmi from gtx780 to amp. Still only digital stereo. I'm at my wits end.

It's something with that uncompressed signal.

I'm receiving all the other (compressed) digital surround formats just fine, but no digital surround to amp from E: D... :? :x

Eureka!!!

Yet another mindless google search finally revealed the key!

Having gotten the hdmi sorted, it was merely a question of configuring the signal out from pc from stereo to 7.1.

See this thread. Round about the middle, you see some screenshots of configuring the hdmi for surround.:

Merry Christmas to one and all!!! Yay...

I thought virtual surround was good. The true surround is yaw droppingly awesome!

Here's the beast I bought by the way:

45 pounds and flawless. And it actually sounds better than my old Denon. Both with music and movies. So I'm a happy, happy, happy camper.

Let's hear that one more time, shall we?:

Doesn't work.

I got an e-mail saying that my TV needs to be 5.1 for the device to work an hour before it arrived:

"Thank you for getting back to us,

As far as I know it is LPCM but will have to look into this.
Also this device would only work with multi channel audio if the connected display is capable of processing that audio type (so it will request that from the source device, as if it cannot process it it would not request 5.1) OR if you can force the source to output 5.1 anyway, and this is possible with most PC's.

- ukhdmi"

I can't find a way to 'force' the PC to do this.

I googled stuff and I think it's to do with 'pass through

I've tried everything I can think of. Under Manage Audio Devices it says HDMI is 'not plugged in'. In the Nvidia control panel under 'Set Up Digital Audio' it just sees 'Panasonic TV'. In Manage Audio Devices, Panasonis TV is seen as Stereo L & R.

I sent the seller an e-mail about this. Probably going to have to send it back.

Sorry to hear it Avi.

What I have learned is that the hdmi port will only register on the pc when it is connected to a turned on device on the other end. I had to turn on my receiver before hdmi was accessible on the pc.

Edit: and your graphics card overrides your motherboard, so don't plug into the motherboard.

Avago-Earo wrote:....Well. My GPU (GT 740 Super Clocked -yeah I know I'm saving for a 'real' one) has 5.1 sound over HDMI, but given the age of my TV (7 year old 32" Panasonic 1080p still amazing picture though) it doesn't support the newer sound signal on HDMI so it dithers down to 2.1. (Jeez this is long winded, get on with it!)

According to the device on the link at the bottom, I should be able to plug the GPU's HDMI into the audio extractor and the HDMI out into the TV then the 5.1 audio is routed to the optical out into my 5.1 amp's optical in and viola! sorted!.....

Don't try running it through your tv first, this will only downscale your signal.

Try running the hdmi straight from your gt740 to the magic box, and from there to your amp. I'm assuming your amp doesn't have hdmi, right?
