Thanks for the input guys :)

My issue with 'wait for gen2' is that if everyone done it there would be no gen2 as the market place wouldn't exist ;) I have tried the Rift DK1 which was showing a few demo's and I loved it. Sure I could see the 'chicken wire' of the LCD but it was an amazing experience (if cheesy roller coaster). I didn't get motion sickness from it - even challenged to stand up and do it, which I only tilted a little from it

Currently I have a 3 22" 1080 monitor setup but as Roger Wilco says, I want to be in the cockpit of my ship, not looking through a window into it. I'd like to see the 3D layout of the ships hud, the landscape of a planet behind the glass of the SRV or be able to turn my head and see where my landing platform is. Even when spanned across all 3 monitors it I still feels like I am just playing a game, just looking into the universe. I imagine that I would be using the VR for the most part, but when long travel is involved just playing via my monitors, then going back to the HMD where needed. The only time my extra monitors get used is when I have long in system travel (or lots of jumps) to browse the forum or watch a TV show. Often I play on my large 42" HD TV which is on the opposite wall to my monitors and have played for hours just on that, not missing having the extra screens. But again I do that when I know I am going to be taking lots of missions or doing a bit of RES hunting, if I am going to be exploring then I go back to my desk.

I don't see a VR HMD as being a replacement for my computer monitors, more something that is supplementary to them, like my TV is. It would be used where appropriate to use it.

Sure gen2 will have better screens etc. but then so will gen3 over gen2 or gen4 over gen3 etc. At the end of it all I guess it is down to the individual to jump in when they feel ready to :)

I don't think either Oculus of HTC are wanting for customers, I believe if you where to order one now, delivery would be "?".
I pre-ordered my oculus a few days after the pre order started and my expected delivery is early June (I hope)..

In short the gamers who have the cash are going gaga for VR if not the first two HMD's there are a few others that should make an appearence this year, of course support for these are unknown.

first off is starvr http://www.starvr.comm probably going to be ridiculously expensive but has a 200 degree fov or something and would require god knows what in pc specs since it's pushing 5120x1440 resolution.

Another I'm keeping an eye on is the fove http://www.getfove.com.
Both of these feature built in eye tracking, letting for example the hardware only having to render full LOD where you are looking, easing processing requirements (maybe).
And I have to admit the Fove looks a lot sexier than the others, that pretty much look like gaming super nerd equipment..

I also think I should say that the rush we are all feeling to hop on the VR bandwagon ASAP is how well the PR machine has handled this over the last few years, there is no lack of early adoptors so don't worry about that, this is just barely starting.

And maybe we get the "budget" ps4 headset compatible with pc's as well, that would make pc vr at 400$.

That said.

After indecision, I decided not to cancel the pre-order of the Vive.
First 1/2 hour when the website wobbled, so hoping for early April delivery still...

Yes OP, there are going to be some first hand reviews coming soon, both in the press as well as some on this forum.

I may have been a little ambiguous. What I meant was that I doubt I will be able to try one anywhere, so I will need to buy one in order to "try" it. I certainly won't be able to try it first playing ED, unless I go to a show they are attending - doubt that, or I miraculously meet up with a fellow ED player who lives nearby who's bought one.

I won't be waiting 3 years for 2nd gen before I get a taste of 3D. :)
It's time to give this another go.

I bought the s6 phone with gear vr just to try it (worst case I got a good phone) and check how receptive I was to the "lack of motion" sickness.
Or if I got any real 3d feel from it (I always thought 3d movie's where a huge yawn and a total waste)

And from just trying the limited games on the gear I can say VR is awesome. Really really awesome.
And 3d 360 movies can surprisingly be really engrossing.
Take the avengers age of ultron "experience" really just a 35 second trailer was more fun and a lot more impressive than the entire movie (granted that movie sucked, but that's beside the point).

Sure the hype is amazingly strong with this. But vr truly does have the potential to become an entirely new format of media.
Something that the hyperbole factories intend to take full advantage of going onwards. And why I'm so utterly on boards..

Same here. But, I think I'm going to wait and grab a DK2, a PSVR, or possibly wait for the nvidia HMD before diving into VR. I think waiting until Q1 2017 works best for me, since I can justify a UHD Gsync screen and a new Titan as a necessary (sort-of) upgrade, while I can't justify a titan, UHD screen, AND an HMD, all in one year. Not with buying a house in a few weeks.. Gotta be a somewhat responsible adult.

So, that's where I'm wondering ...

How much better is VR than a 3D?

Trailers and videos, as well as other, "static" (even if you control your movement) games are already done with 3Dtv. I've had both shutter and passive, going back the way from before 3Dtv, but even old, dual-3Dfx Voodoo2 cards shutter glasses at 1024x768 @ 150Hz (75Hz per eye).

Is the head tracking experience in the VR that much better? I've done some Elite using my head tracker and 3Dtv (720p, nothing great), but am looking forward to full VR in a few months (just upgraded to a GTX 980 Ti 6GiB for it).

@TheBS
I hope you meant the 980ti ?
Although 780 is no slouch.

I have only tried it with my phone and gear vr so not tested a full fledged HMD yet.

But I consider 3dtv's an utter waste, it detracts from any experience far more than it gives and I barely consider it gives anything.
3d is a fecking joke.
I have barely seen two 3d movies since this current fad started. First was life of pi as I wanted to test my then new plasma.
The second movie was Pacific rim and I was two liters into 4.5% beer and a buddy came over.
Who suggested watching it in 3d. I normally watch all movies in 2d even though my Sony hw50 projector fully supports 3d.
(I spend even more money on my home theater than my pc, in fact my bluray player cost more than the 980ti. Totally worth it)

I too was curious about vr and if the hype was justified.
I actually got the s6 and gear vr set as a way to test (worst case I get a new phone, I am typing this on it while watching buffy on netflix, yeah I'm that bored)
And with vr and the 1:1 headtracking really puts you into it.

It makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE :)
And this is based on my experience with only rotational tracking, the vive, or rift with space tracking systems will add even more to it and playing games on the gear vr does not feel like playing on a mobile device even watching movies this way isn't bad. The fov on the gear vr is a little low and sure could use higher resolution, but I can definitely see it as the beginning of something new.
Something that could work well in a world where living space is at a premium. Giving big entertainment experiences in the space of a chair.
Honestly the home theater equivalent of headphones.

I have a mostly theoretical issue with headtracking. It's not 1:1.if it was you would spend half the time looking away from the screen. If I'm looking at the ceiling I won't be able to see my screen you know?

Even with this limited testing I have felt comfortable enough to pre order the rift.
And I'm almost tempted to say "sod the money I can't bring debt with me to the afterlife" and order a vive as well but I think I'm going to wait a little bit first.

Duh, yeah, GTX 980 Ti 6GiB ... thanx for catching that. Brain fart (again).

I thought Tomb Raider looked and played very well in 3Dtv. A few others were pretty good as well.
But games must be written for it. Generically, it kinda sucks.
