What's the difference between gimballed and turreted pulse lasers? Which is better? What's a good fit for a viper?

Reminded myself not to take any missions other than basic hauling or kill x amount of pirates. I took one 'Dangerous Cargo' mission where I just needed to hold some Cobalt in my inventory until some dude tells me where to fly it. Well it went fine, no troubles, a few pirates tried their luck that's all. The guy told me to drop the load to an outpost called Glass Port.

Now, how do I land my Anaconda to an outpost..?

I hope these are fixed in the next patch too.

-Fixed weapons are like the name says, fixed, so you aim by pointing the ship to the enemy.
-Gimballed do some aiming themself, making it easier for you to hit the target so you don't have to be that precise with the aiming. Less powerful than the fixed version.
-Turreted do all the aiming themself, and shoot in other directions than front too. So if you have an enemy on top of you, no problem, the turrets keep shooting. Least powerful of the three versions.

I use turreted weapons on big ships only, and even then only some smaller weapons, not all. So for viper I would probably put fixed myself, but I think the majority will use gimballed versions as the fixed ones are the most difficult to hit an enemy with. Makes the life easier.

Fixed weapon is the only one not affected by enemy chaff.

Gimballed weapons have a movement arc of about 180 deg (meaning your target only has to be vaguely in front of you) and can track your target, there are effected by chaff and are weaker than fixed weapons. Gimballed are the choice for most people who struggle with fixed weapons (i.e. most people).

Turreted have a movement arc of about 360 deg (meaning your target can be behind you), again they will track your target, but actually have three modes of operation (selected from the right panel) 1. Forward Fire - Your turrets will act as fixed weapons and will be shooting only manually, 2. Targeted Enemy - The turrets will automatically shoot targets which you lock manually on that are within distance, 3. Fire at Will - The turrets will focus automatically on any wanted target which is firing at you (in this mode two turrets can focus on different targets at the same time). Turreted weapons are weaker than gimballed weapons and again are effected by chaff.

Both types are subject to your ship geometry (i.e. you can't shoot through you own ship).

Turreted tend to only be used on ships with very poor manoeuvrability (i.e. big traders), for a viper you want gimballed.

Those fuel rats in open aren't f-ing around.

Joined their IRC, got assigned two guys, winged up, bam. The whole thing took like 12 minutes and most of that was me adding them to my IRC client. Like no joke, within 20 seconds of winging up and popping my beacon I was getting fueled. I expected to sit there not logged in for a day or something. Shoutout to Zman9600 and adanaran.

So, do most people run a second fuel tank on the Vulture? It's possible I'm just a chump, but going from an A rated Asp Explorer to my first Vulture, I ran out of gas for the first time within my first few jumps. Like two jumps away from Azrael, coming from Phiagre.

But yeah, second tank usual in a Vulture loadout? Or does everyone just pay more attention than me?

The Fuel Rats are indeed great.

As for the Vulture, I'm not aware of people using a second tank (I guess some could), but yes you'll only get 2 or 3 jumps per tank, so you need to be careful, best to think of it as a short range ship.

Yeah, coming from an A rated asp ex I wasn't even thinking. I got so used to having decent range and a big tank that I got caught out there in like my first 3-5 jumps. Derp. Learning moment.

This is after moving all my ships, aside from a hauler taxi I took to Asellus Primus, over to Azrael, or the general vicinity.

Also, just because they saved my bacon (MMHHHHMMM, bacon), and so promptly:

I would recommend using a fuel scoop on a vulture, and keep in mind that you'll need to scoop every 3rd star or so as you travel.
