I played on the Vive for the first time this afternoon. The jaggies are really bad everywhere, but I only had problems with the text when it was in my peripherals (I have problems with everything in my peripherals). I'm not sure exactly what others can see, but mine is readable.

But no issues for Rift users, correct?
And better performance too?

In any case, I just pre-ordered my Rift. Hopefully I'll get it in July. :(

Seemingly same delivery batch as I am looking at.
Even though I ordered mine less than a week after the pre-order launched...
:(

Then it sounds like mine will be September if people are still waiting for an order from months ago. :(

Nah I simply think they where bumrushed with pre-orders and it now has died down completely.
Seems vive is doing a lot better job of keeping things fresh with consumers.
After the pre-order announcement there has pretty much been nothing from oculus apart from a delay (my original delivery date was june) and they will cover shipping cost. To me that's $50 less so I'll take it.
The vive and htc are using their store front connection and last week I got a newsletter announcement from the major electronics store chain here in Norway that they will sell the vive soon with a demo model available for testing in their flagship store (I don't live close enough to test) but this alone will mean htc gets a huge leg up, at least locally regardless if it is more expensive.

The average Joe is never going to order a device like this across borders and certainly not sight unseen. That's only a very small group of avid nerds who will do this. All of them (that can afford it) has now probably pre-ordered a rift or a vive.

Needless to say. I suspect vr adoption of the mainstream masses will be slow but take 10-15 years from now I hazard a guess saying this could be the equivalent to video the headphone was to music listening. In world where living space (and the illusion of privacy) is at a premium the lack of shared experience is as much an allure as it is a detraction.

Anyhoo I'm rambling.

I am honestly tempted to get a vive as well once I can get it locally. I was a little pessimistic considering the cost so it's actually being sold $300 cheaper than I assumed.

The lack of information has been troubling. People are willing to wait, as long as a company is forward and honest with target dates, and keep them informed when things change. They've utterly fouled that up, and it may be worse than we know ... for now.

It's part of the reason I didn't bother with a pre-order. I predicted such.

Well I have jumped ships. From the rift to vive.
Still at least 20 days from having it (being optimistic).
Far as I can see there are lot of tech demos and great bunch of smaller games for VR.
Outside of sims there really isn't that much "big games" for VR.

And ED is pretty much what I play. Sure I will buy and try a lot of the existing games.
But for thexample current events owners and @Darwin in particular.

Given the current aliasing and text readability issues how much does it impact the overall experience ?

In short. If you have a couple of hours for playing ED do you use the vive or do you choose to play on regular screen?

I'm just curious. Sitting here with my phone in the middle of the night obsessing about the vive and VR in general.

I never had a problem with text legibility at all, and the aliasing is pretty bad (especially at first) but once you get into the game you hardly notice. It does look a lot nicer & clearer when you go back to non-VR though.

As for VR vs non-VR, it depends what I'm up to in game. If I'm planning to do combat, missions or just screw around I'll go for VR. Trading and exploration are generally a bit more dull, so I'll either play in VR with some good music or on a normal screen with a video on my second monitor. I messed around in the SRV for the first real time a few days ago, looking around on the surface, scanning stuff and finding salvage. In VR the SRV is one of the best parts of the game IMO, I never wanted to spend much time driving around until I got my Vive.

All in all, I'm very happy with ED in the Vive. I bought the game originally in anticipation of the headset because it apparently had good support and there weren't many other substantial games, then I had about a month during which I got completely hooked on Elite. When the Vive finally arrived, it went from "playing a game" to "flying a spaceship!

Reddit has been keeping its main page updated with info and links to yet more pages.

HTC has seemingly solved their supply issues.
Oculus is an utter mess.

But since I'm taking a 6 month break from Elite, it'll probably be later this year before I buy.
